12. She’s right-brained

Arya is a lefty, even though Maisie Williams is right-handed. And as the old adage goes, “Left-handed people are in their right minds!” That goes back to the theory behind lateralization of the brain function, and how the opposite hemisphere of our brain could be connected to our dominant hands. Though at times we use both sides of our brain, Arya seems to fall into the right-brained camp more than the left.

Only about 13% of people are left-handed, so it’s relatively uncommon. Those who think with the sort of “cross-wired” brain function are more spatially aware, creative, in touch with their emotions, and have great imaginations. Here in Season 2’s “The Old Gods and the New,” Arya again shows how she can stand up to Tywin and react to his questioning with some creativity. She’s honest, but not maliciously manipulative. She has a keen ability to feel people out, and it’s something that saves her, but also almost gets her killed.

Since left-handedness is so uncommon, it also gives her an advantage in sword combat. Syrio’s water dancing lessons have helped her become more agile, and her right-brained activity will only allow her to feel her opponent’s movements more clearly. Exploring characters like Arya can be fun on a cerebral level, since the layers never stop presenting themselves.
