#MondayMotivation: Our Woman of the Week is Hillary Clinton!
By Emily Scott
Every Monday, Culturess chooses one woman in pop culture to be our Woman of the Week. These women inspire and empower us to kick ass, take names, fight the good fight, and live our best lives. Today, our Woman of the Week is Hillary Clinton!
We’ve just come out of a real roller-coaster of a weekend. On the one hand, on Friday, a racist, misogynistic fascist was given the highest office in our nation, despite a vast majority of Americans having voted for his opponent. But on the other hand, the next day, literal millions of people gathered all over the world to protest his inauguration. The streets of America were packed with women, men, non-binary folks, and children who came out for the Women’s March on Washington and its sister marches. They were there for many reasons, but for me and many other participants, one woman in particular was on our minds. That woman, of course, is Hillary Clinton.
Hillary Clinton is a Yale graduate, lawyer, First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State, and the most highly qualified presidential candidate the United States has ever seen. She has endured the most extreme vitriol ever directed at any candidate, from both her detractors and her opponent. As a woman, the world has held her to higher expectations than any male candidate. And she has met and exceeded them. She continues to face all of it with grace. And 65,844,954 Americans voted for her – more people than have voted for any other presidential candidate ever.
When the inauguration that should have been hers occurred on Friday, many of us mourned. When her opponent made his speech, we thought of what her inspiring, world-changing speech as the first woman president would have been. But leave it to the lady herself to give us a hint of what she might have said. In her own concession speech, she said, “And to all the women, and especially the young women, who put their faith in this campaign and in me, I want you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion… And to all the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.”
Since Hillary Clinton’s electoral college loss, she has been laying low. And honestly, good for her. She has been put through the wringer for years. She deserves some time to rest and take care of herself. But we know he hasn’t left us. It’s unfortunate that she felt she had to attend the inauguration of a man who has done nothing but insult, disrespect, and lie about her. But her presence in spite of her mistreatment is nothing short of defiant. And yesterday, she tweeted several messages of support for the Women’s March. Her support, hard work, and public service prove that she’s with us. And, as always, we’re with her.
Secretary Clinton, we can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for us. We are proud to have you as our champion too. This week, don’t let the Women’s March be your last activist stand. Fight the patriarchy, just like Hillary Clinton has done her whole life.
