5. The Random Songs

If you have Neil Patrick Harris in a show, chances are that he’s going to sing at some point. Why? Because it’s Neil Patrick Harris. He always sings nowadays. But it weirdly fit with the television show. The creepy theme song and the final song of the show really helped set the mood once more for the ending of the season.

We learn in the last few minutes of the season that Lemony Snicket and Count Olaf used to be friends in school. We don’t know what happened to them or how Lemony really is connected to the Baudelaire children and their parents, but we do know that he and Count Olaf used to be close.

And so having the show end with everyone singing a song titled “That’s Not How the Story Goes” and explaining how the children are just meant to lead unfortunate lives really continues the whole tone of the show. These poor children go through so much but that’s just their luck in life. And this song is really focusing on that.

They’re not meant to be happy, they’re unfortunate. And for those of us who read these books as kids, we know better than anything how sad their lives are.
