10. Their Intelligence

Each of the Baudelaire children have something special about them. But their intelligence is clear in the way the three speak to each other (yes, even Sunny). And it is honestly very encouraging to children. When we are young, we’re taught to not talk back to adults but rarely do adults see children as intelligent beings.

A Series of Unfortunate Events does an incredible job of showing children how they can be smart and intelligent and worthwhile. The Baudelaire’s work so hard and love learning and it instills that into the children who are reading these books.

So yes, it is great to see three very intelligent people struggling to be happy and finding ways to smile through all the terrible things but it is better to see these children and how their intelligence helps them survive. To me, it’s just a great message to send to kids.

You don’t have to apologize for being smart. Violet, Klaus and Sunny don’t and it is nothing to be ashamed of. So many movies and books makes intelligent kids the nerds but the Baudelaire’s celebrate their intellect and it is an absolutely magnificent thing to see. Also, they’re just generally awesome at everything.
