Victoria Episode 2 Synopsis: Marriage is What Brings Us Together Today
Things won’t get easier for our young queen on the second episode of Victoria on Masterpiece, which is actually titled “Brocket Hall”.
Presumably there is a crossover between fans of The Princess Bride and Victoria, so that someone other than yours truly will find quoting the movie to describe this week’s episode humorous. Anyway, last week on Victoria, we met our young heroine as well as Lord Melbourne, who’s important enough to get a nickname. Even when Her (young) Majesty should really change out her ladies-in-waiting, she refuses. This week’s episode, however, will start off a rather important thread of Victoria’s life: her marriage.
Now, we all know she’ll marry Prince Albert, since this series does pride itself on at least a little historical accuracy. However, that doesn’t mean the show can’t cover some of the negotiations between all of the court factions.
Here’s the synopsis for this week’s episode, “Brocket Hall”, via TVGuide:
"“Victoria grows into her royal role; and ponders marriage. In other events, her friendship with Lord Melbourne grows complex.”"
We’ve already seen how Victoria’s relationship with Lord Melbourne has started to grow complex. After all, his power as Prime Minister is by no means secure. Although the queen managed to fend off a changing of the bedchamber guard last episode when Sir Robert Peel tried to form a government, such a play probably won’t work twice. At some point, she will have to have a PM other than Melbourne, which means she may need to learn to accept other perspectives, politically speaking.
As for marriage, finding a suitor willing to marry a queen regnant is not particularly a walk in the park. We are, after all, talking about the 19th century. Furthermore, she is learning more about how to rule as a queen in her own right and how to use her power wisely.
