5. Callie Torres – Grey’s Anatomy

I’ve heard so many stories on Twitter about how Callie Torres is the character that pushed so many people to finally understand themselves and come out to their community. And that’s just so important. I’ve read something about each of these characters that have done this, that these characters have such an impact on us to be as vulnerable as possible with ourselves and our family. And if that’s not inspiring, then I really don’t know what is.

Callie’s coming out story is in my top 5 because I think it’s so different than most. First of all, she’s an established women. She’s no child in high school. It’s also not as though she struggled with her sexuality through her life. She dated men. She was married to a man, and she was happy and content. Until something clicked inside of her. There was no build up, no questioning, no confusion. It just happened and she knew. Yes, she still had to come out to her parents, but it was different than the others because she was so sure of herself.

Although Sara Ramirez is off the show now, her story was critical in the queer TV movement and will constantly remind viewers that you can come out as late as your want and however you want. There’s no specific way to do it.
