Send a Nice Tweet to Someone You Don’t Know Well

The internet can be a scary place, generally, but Twitter often seems particularly intimidating to people. This is probably because the site has a notorious harassment problem, but it’s also because a lot of us are strangers on this platform. And the prospect of talking to someone you don’t know particularly well – or, at all, really, outside of just reading their tweets – can seem daunting. Will they really want to talk to you? Will they think you’re being rude? But one of the best ways we can all help make Twitter as a platform a little better is by spreading a little more kindness on it.

Did someone write an article you really liked? Tell them. Did someone draw something you love? Let them know. Do you love someone’s 35 tweet-long thread in which they commented on every aspect of the “Halloween” episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Say so! Does it look like someone is getting harassed? Cat GIFs are often welcome distractions.  Don’t be creepy about it, obviously, but be kind. Be friendly. Those are things we can all use a little more of online. Twitter is an amazing place, but it’s easy to forget that when all you hear about are trolls. So it’s nice to be reminded there are people listening and reading because they like what you have to say. And you might even make a friend!
