24. Toy Story

Yes, I am really arguing that 1995 classic Pixar film Toy Story is creepy as all get-out. Allow me to explain.

The central conceit of the film and its sequels centers on the notion that toys are intelligent, self-aware creatures. Moreover, for whatever reason, they cannot let humans know that toys are anything other than lifeless bits of plastic, cloth, and wood. Given the relative aging of these human characters, it also appears that the toys of Toy Story are seemingly immortal (but that will be explored in another entry on this list).

I don’t know about you, but that idea alone got under my skin when I was a kid. What do you mean, my toys are alive? Can they hear me right now? Why won’t they talk to me? Oh god, you mean they remember everything I’ve said to them. Needless to say, I spent more time than I’d like to admit trying to catch them in the act of living. Even as an adult, I sometimes wonder….

And one more thing. Remember Sid? He’s the central antagonist of the first movie. Sid is a lonely, neglected kid who has taken to making strange, imaginative creations out of toys. He also enjoys destroying those toys, as do many other elementary-aged boys. Now, as far as Sid knows, he’s just messing with junky plastic toys. He’s being creative – if, yeah, also destroying other people’s property.

But then the toys start talking back to him. He rightfully freaks out, as anyone would. Of course, what would he say to anyone else? “The toys started talking to me and told me that they’ll be watching.” Well, that’s a one-way ticket to an inpatient facility, my friend. So Sid, weird, neglected Sid, is left with this terrifying information for the rest of his life.
