Kennedy Center

Want to see the Nation’s Capital at its best? Go to the roof terrace of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for incredible views. And the beautiful theaters and galleries are masterworks of their own. Not to mention the fact that the Kennedy Center is the city’s premiere destination for music and theater.

Feel free to wander around and take in everything the Kennedy Center has to offer, including the Hall of Nations, the Rubenstein Pipe Organ, Bird Room, Opera House, South Plaza, North Grand Foyer, Hall of States, and more.

The easiest way to take in the Kennedy Center is by taking the guided tour, which

"highlights the historic events that led up to the establishment of the national cultural center that is also our nation’s living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, and includes an interactive exhibit on his life and presidency. Visitors also learn about the works of art given to the Center, such as Robert Berks’s bust of President Kennedy, Willy Weber’s Apollo X, and the stunning Israeli Lounge. The tour concludes with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the nation’s capital from the building’s roof terrace."

The tour also includes Artistic Gifts to the Kennedy Center and the Artists Who Created Them.

One of the best things about the Kennedy Center are the 6 p.m. free performances on the Millennium Stage. You can see the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra on January 19, The Wee Trio on January 20, and The American Soldier on the January 22. See the January 2017 events calendar for details. There are also lots of not-free great music and dance performances that you can buy tickets for in advance.

Just please avoid the totally-not-improv play Shear Madness, which overflows with obnoxious and out-of-date stereotypes. This long-running performance should have been canceled 25 years ago, when I first reviewed it for my college paper. Oh well. Everything else at the Kennedy Center is well worth your time.
