Saturday Night Live Season 42 Episode 11 Felicity Jones Recap
Saturday Night Live is back from its winter break with host Felicity Jones and musical guest Sturgill Simpson! And just like the host itself, it was great!
Felicity Jones took over hosting Saturday Night Live this week and she was absolutely adorable. But did anyone really doubt that? With musical guest Sturgill Simpson, Felicity brought SNL into 2017 with quite the episode! Hot off her run in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we expected great things from English actress and that’s exactly what we got.
Cold Open
Our dreams came true when the writers over at SNL gave us another Donald Trump cold open. The best part about this one? They just continued to make ‘golden shower’ jokes after the Trump Dossier was released.
“I’d like to ask you about your big Russian pee pee party!” And that was just the start. Baldwin’s Trump unleashed a whole slew of urine jokes. But basically the show just tore apart the entire Trump press conference.
And, of course, we got a bit of Beck Bennett as Vladimir Putin and that’s always a golden time!
Opening Monologue
Felicity Jones was nervous. And you could tell. Honestly, if anyone makes fun of someone for being nervous hosting Saturday Night Live, I want to see you get up there and so the opening monologue. But the monologue got pretty amazing when they gave us what we always wanted: Tina Fey as Princess Leia telling Felicity not to worry.
Precious Felicity ending up doing a great job with her monologue. Especially with the help of Kenan Saw Gerrera and Princess Tina Fey.
Beard Hunk
The main bit of this sketch got really old really fast. All the women vying for the Beard hunks love and affection and they keep tagging each other out so that they can talk to Beck Bennett’s hunk. But after the first few times, it got kind of boring.
Felicity Jones did a good job in the sketch and it seemed as if her nerves from the opening monologue had worn off by this point. And while there were some great jokes within each girl, it was just kind of boring after a while.
Shondra and Malik
Malik’s car won’t start. The entire digital short is a little strange and then Malik (Kenan Thompson) started having some car issues that Shondra (Leslie Jones) had to fix. It was so absurd that it ended up being quite funny.
Kenan keeps trying to scare Leslie Jones but every time he tries to drive away, his car won’t start. In the end, Shonda is having a heart attack and needs to go to the hospital so they all reluctantly get in Malik’s car. And just as they are about to leave, the car blows up. Again, it was absurd but quite funny.
Theatre Donor
Ever go to a theater and have that one person who doesn’t know what a whisper is? Well, Albee Durberry is that but a bit worse. Mainly because his nurse has to continually loudly give him medicine or fix his chair or change his socks.
But none of that is as terrible as a phone going off during the production. Honestly, the best part of this sketch was the physical comedy of Mike Day as Albee. He just continually flipped out while his nurse tried to take care of him and it was great.
The Princess and the Curse
The princess has a curse and it is something that no man wants! 15 extra pounds late every evening that goes away come daylight! But there is a way to break the curse, the prince has to lose a quarter of an inch off his penis.
This sketch was pretty funny, just taking a basic idea of a fairytale with a curse and putting a twist on it.
The Susan B. Anthony House
Ever want to ask your favorite historical figure a question? Well, maybe not. This sketch focuses on a group of women who go to the Susan B. Anthony house and summon her. The problem is that when they go to leave, Susan won’t leave them alone and continue to question them and try and inspire them with her words.
It was just Kate McKinnon playing another amazing woman and making everyone break in the process. She did a great job and the whole sketch was pretty funny to watch that weird dream we’ve all had come to life.
Sturgill Simpson
If you like blues/rock then Sturgill Simpson is the man for you! If you think that kind of music is fine, then maybe you won’t like him as much but you can still appreciate his skill and talent. His voice is something from another era and it really all is a mix of musical sounds that have never really blended before quite like how they do with Sturgill.
His first song was amazing (and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t really like his style of music). It was fun and just a really great song to kick off the musical guests of 2017! Also the fact that Sturgill had a Rebel Alliance symbol on his guitar was pretty awesome.
Weekend Update
Normally, Weekend Update is my least favorite part of Saturday Night Live. This week, that was a different story. Weekend Update took on Trump and his week and it was incredible. They tore into his press conference and all the actions that Trump was doing leading up to his inauguration.
Most of the time, Weekend Update goes away from the Trump jokes but that’s what we want. We want Saturday Night Live to tear him apart.
And then their new segment with Pete Davidson called “First Impressions with Pete Davidson” happened and made us love Pete Davidson a little more. He tore apart Trump’s cabinet picks and honestly, just love Pete Davidson.
Journey to Boob Mountain
Actors are getting a lot flack right now for their appeals to the American public after the election. And while this sketch makes fun of that, it also makes very little sense but is still amazing. It is what Saturday Night Live does extremely well.
It is just an insane journey of actors and a director talking about a very idiotic movie but it was so interesting to watch. Why? I’m not entirely sure but it was a pretty great sketch.
Corporate Retreat
Honestly, once again, a basic sketch that just has a funny premise. There were three ladies from the corporate retreat just making jokes about being loose but it was funny. Why? Because sometimes sketches like that just work.
