11. Richard Webber

Now Richard is one of my more problematic faves. While he’s the rightful leader of the hospital, I question some of this ethics and choices. Sometimes, I feel like he was a little hypocritical and inconsistent.

Obviously, it was hard for him to make certain decisions at the hospital when his personal feelings got involved. But that’s kind of the point. Further, it’s why Bailey’s better at the job. Though he clearly had favorites, Richard’s best moments come from when he’s being a friend instead of a doctor. He always helps his doctors get back on their feet and doesn’t mind breaking the rules to do so.

My favorite scene occurs in Season 3 when Richard attends a seminar with Cristina and does the sutures with his eyes closed. Then, he tells that she “can’t beat the Chief.” Like, I forget that Richard was young once. I know there have been several flashbacks to his time with Ellis over the course of the series, but a full-fledged spin-off might be fun. I mean, in addition to being one of the best general surgeons on the west coast, he was a cheater and an alcoholic. So, his story’s there. We just need to explore it more.
