13. George O’Malley

This could be a controversial ranking, because I’m sure there are a ton of people who think George deserves to be higher. But let me remind everyone about Cheater!George / Mr. Low Self-Esteem / Captain ‘I Got Married Way Too Soon So I Can Feel Good About Myself’.

Of course, George was an excellent doctor. He had all the right traits for the perfect doctor, which is why he was an audience favorite at the beginning. Unfortunately, his dad died and he became much less perfect. To focus on the positive, he did help deliver Miranda’s baby when she lost hope, and he did keep everyone’s secrets (for better or worse) because he was a really great friend. Plus, he saved that guy in an elevator once and made Karev look like a bad doctor.

But George’s appeal comes from how often he did things because they were the right thing to do and not because he wanted the recognition. He wanted to be a good doctor and save lives, which is why he agreed to do his internship over again and contemplated joining the army. While some of his storylines were better than others, if we imagine what could’ve been, George probably would’ve made an excellent candidate for Chief of Surgery.
