5. Annalee Call (Alien: Resurrection)

Alien: Resurrection could have been good. A young Joss Whedon even wrote the script before his Buffy days. It stars not only Sigourney Weaver, but Winona Ryder. It could have been a fascinating look at Ripley metaphorically adrift in the far future, with a whip-smart script and great performances from its leads.

But, that wasn’t the case. The movie is a great big mess. However, you can still identify elements of Alien: Resurrection that hold potential. Take Winona Ryder’s character, Annalee Call.

When we first meet Call, she appears simply to be a young engineer aboard a smuggler ship, the Betty. She almost instantly recognizes Ripley and attempts to kill her, frightened of the possibility that Ripley is carrying a Xenomorph alien inside herself. Otherwise, Call appears to be naive and is treated with disdain by most of Betty’s crew.

Since she’s included on this list, it should come as no great surprise that Call reveals herself as an “Auton”, or android. Call is, in fact, one of the few remaining androids in existence. Conveniently enough, however, Call is able to patch into the computer of their ship and direct its course. Androids, as long as they’re on your side, can be ever so convenient.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Call is her religious belief. Genuine spirituality can be rare in horror science fiction in particular. Call, however, harbors an apparently devout belief in a God. However – and, wow, is this depressing – she doesn’t believe that Autons are capable of going to an afterlife. If it makes you feel any better, she is one of the few surviving crew members at the end of the film, so at least we don’t have to explore that philosophical quandary.
