7. Dolores Abernathy (Westworld)
In the 2016 HBO series, Westworld, visitors can pay predictably large sums of money to take part in various fictional playgrounds. Delos Incorporated, a large entertainment company, maintains all of these parks. Season one takes place in a section of the Delos-run park that is modeled on the 19th century American Southwest.
Guests interact with “hosts”, biomechanical androids created by Delos Incorporated. Hosts are programmed to act out certain story lines on a repeating loop. They’re encouraged to remember any interactions with corporation employees as odd dreams. However, a number of hosts have started to “malfunction” – they have begun to break out of their respective loops and have apparently begun to gain sentience.
Dolores Abernathy is one of the oldest active hosts in the park. She is initially content with her “loop” as a rancher’s daughter. When she starts to remember her past experiences, however, things become more complicated. She begins to deviate from her programming and starts recognizing the artificiality of her world. Dolores also begins to remember some of the more horrifying things that have happened to her past incarnations, including death, assault, and strange experiences in Westworld’s control center. The cheery rancher’s daughter soon discovers that she is a far stranger, far more capable being that she could have imagined.
