Watch: A24 Releases Mysterious Trailer for Untitled Movie
By Amy Woolsey
The studio responsible for giving us Moonlight and The Lobster looks to amaze us again. See the teaser trailer for A24’s cryptic, untitled sci-fi movie.
With the dominance of mega-budget blockbusters and the rise of streaming services, independent cinema is in a state of flux. Luckily for all of us who enjoy movies that aren’t extensions of franchises, A24 exists. The studio, established by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in 2012, is on a roll these days. Last year, they were responsible for distributing a number of critically acclaimed films, including The Witch, Green Room, The Lobster, American Honey, and Moonlight.
Even flush with success, though, A24 doesn’t appear to be deterred from pushing boundaries and taking risks. On Wednesday, they quietly released a trailer online. It is roughly a minute long and contains no apparent information about the movie (or show) it’s advertising. There’s no title, no cast list, no director – nothing.
Well, you can check it out for yourself below:
The trailer opens with the image of an infant overlaid with the words “Beyond Reality” in clean white font. From there, a montage flows by, filled with seemingly random shots of people swimming, watching projected film, looking in the mirror, and so on. The original text fades into “Realize Feeling”, which then morphs into a series of other slogans, ending with “Live Beyond”. It’s silent, except for ominous droning noises in the background.
So, what is this? First of all, there’s definitely a science-fiction element, judging by the shots of futuristic-looking technology. It looks very dystopian, reminiscent of Westworld. Another thing that sticks out is the recurrence of three characters: an Asian man and woman, and a teenage boy who vaguely resembles the creepy kid in the French zombie show Les Revenants. Could it be a Black Mirror-style anthology series? Or maybe it’s one of those movies with intersecting stories. Or it could be something else entirely. My initial thought was something related to virtual reality, a popular topic in recent sci-fi.
Of course, this is hardly the first unconventional marketing campaign by a movie studio. Sony slapped “For Humans Only” signs on buses and billboards to advertise District 9, and 20th Century Fox accompanied the standard trailers for Prometheus with fictional viral videos and a fake website. J.J. Abrams caused a stir last year when Paramount released a trailer for a secret Cloverfield sequel mere weeks before the movie’s premiere. But at least those movies had titles.
Anyway, suffice to say we’re intrigued.
