The First Trailer for the Horror Anthology XX Actually Looks Terrifying
Not only does XX have our interest based on its coming from four female directors, but it also looks like it will be absolutely terrifying.
Unfortunately, although the horror genre has never really died, it’s also a tough genre to do well. When it’s good, it’s great! (See American Horror Story: Asylum or Murder House.) When it’s bad, it’s very, very bad. (See American Horror Story: Asylum or Freak Show.) That’s why this new trailer for XX has us intrigued.
The film is actually an anthology, with each story coming from a different female director. You would suspect that that would make things harder in terms of producing a trailer. This isn’t necessarily wrong, but it looks like each story is separate enough to pick out the threads of each.
Here’s the trailer in question, with a hat tip to Nerdist and a warning that there are some moderately graphic images shown in the trailer:
“The Box” comes from Jovanka Vuckovic; that’s the story we see open the entire trailer, with Danny, the young boy, seeing whatever’s in the box and then slowly wasting away as he refuses to eat. Roxanne Benjamin directed “Don’t Fall”, which looks like it’s the story set out in the woods with people on a camping trip encountering something that looks rather human and definitely murderous. (Hey, horror tropes are tropes for a reason.)
Karyn Kusama handled “Her Only Living Son”. Based on what’s shown during the announcement that that’s her section, we think that’s the story of the boy who pulls fingernails out. Finally, Anna Clark directed “The Birthday Party,” which gets the least amount of screentime. Nerdist additionally reports that each story will somehow connect to the next, with Sofia Carrillo directing those sections.
Next: Woody Harrelson's in the Han Solo Movie
XX will first hit the Sundance Film Festival before reaching on-demand services Feb. 17, otherwise known as the week of Valentine’s Day. No wonder the film’s logo is a pair of lips that also resembles a skull.
