Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet Has Some of the Best Trailers
Drew Barrymore’s new comedy show, Santa Clarita Diet, looks gruesomely funny, and it also looks like the show is embracing both the gruesome and the funny.
Just in case you missed the memo about Santa Clarita Diet, it’s actually a zombie comedy. Drew Barrymore’s character actually becomes a zombie at the start of the series, but she also has to keep working as a realtor and as a mom. Basically, her newfound desire to eat people is just another speed bump in suburban life. When you look at it that way, the new trailers Netflix released become even funnier.
First up, here’s Barrymore herself.
Since it’s the new year, ads for weight loss programs are basically everywhere right now. We really can’t see Oprah advocating for eating people in her Weight Watchers ads, though. (Really, this show should have debuted on Jan. 1 for maximum comedy.) There’s even the usual note of telling you that the first month is free! It’s nice to see the show already embracing the general absurdity of its premise and running with it.
Of course, there’s that other set of all-too-common ads: the one featuring a family member. Timothy Olyphant, take it away.
Even with a very unhelpful voiceover censoring the best parts of this little story, Olyphant’s body language leaves very little to the imagination. We note as well that both trailers talk about eating people who “deserve it” or “jerks”, to quote from both trailers here. That prompts a question. Is Sheila, Barrymore’s character, only going to eat bad people, like some sort of zombie Dexter? Who qualifies as a bad person? Do rival realtors count?
By the way, the website shown at the end really exists and makes no effort to hide its secret. However, like the two trailers, it also plays things completely straight, down to even having shareable photos. Here’s to hoping that the show keeps the comedy up.
