21 Women Who Inspire Us To Make 2017 A Better Year
14. Brittani Nichols
Brittani Nichols is someone else you definitely need to know about. Not only is she funny as hell but speaking her mind is a theme in everything she does. I say this like I know her; I don’t (although I wish I did), but through her writing, her web series, her tweets, and her website, you can sense her honesty, passion, and desire for a brighter, more diverse, more inclusive future.
Let’s talk about her web series, Words With Girls. She has an article in Huffington post about it titled, “Words With Girls: A Female Show? A Black Show? A Queer Show? Let’s Just Call It a Comedy.” That, right there, got me hooked.
"“When I decided to create Words With Girls, I was determined not to cater to one demographic. I didn’t want a Web series about exploring the Los Angeles gay scene or a coming-out story or a rocky but loving lesbian relationship. I just wanted the show to be funny. The series is meant to subvert the premise of acceptable dialogue for women by having queer ladies talk about their lives in a way that everyone finds relatable. The world in the series is populated by outsiders, including me, and still I strived to make everyone feel included. Unfortunately, this effort at inclusiveness is a courtesy that the mainstream rarely engages in.”"
The web series came out in 2012 but I think it’s even more relevant today than it was 5 years ago.
