In 30 seconds, The LEGO Batman Movie manages to crack several jokes about Robin, but also talk about Batman’s psychological issues.
The LEGO Batman Movie may just turn out to be the best Batman movie in years or ever. Sorry, The Dark Knight and Batman, you both may lose your thrones by this February. Why on earth do we say this? Well, it all has to do with the new 30-second teaser released on Twitter for the LEGO version.
The characterization of Robin as a slightly goofy hug enthusiast continues to delight us, as does the choice to put him in the LEGO equivalent of short shorts. That’s some nice attention to detail (and way better than the Joel Schumacher costumes, which we refuse to link to out of sanity reasons).
The film also clearly looks willing to crack jokes at all of Batman’s quirks. That includes having a young ward. Yes, Barbara’s right: it’s weirder if Robin isn’t his son. (No comment on how this affects any and all rankings of Robins, thanks to Damian Wayne.) However, at the same time, Alfred makes a great point about Batman psychologically, with the line about Bats not wanting to be part of a family again.
Also, there’s a Lifetime movie and wine-drinking joke. This movie might be for kids, but we’d lay down some good money that that line will fly over many, many heads. Who knew Alfred was a Pinot Grigio enthusiast?
Basically, it appears that The LEGO Batman Movie knows the references it wants to make, and wants to lovingly point out some of the interesting parts of the Caped Crusader’s personality while also being a cute, kid-friendly flick. Additionally, any movie that can use Three Dog Night’s “One is the Loneliest Number” deserves at least a look.
