Netflix Released an Infinite Runner Game and It’s Awesome
By Buckie Wells
Need something to fill the void until your favorite Netflix shows return some time later this year? This arcade game should be able to help.
Playing games is one of the best pastimes in the world, bested only by binge-watching something on Netflix. Thanks to an infinite runner released by Netflix, we can now enjoy the best of both worlds.
With Netflix’s flixarcade (and a nod to io9), you can go crazy on the space bar and run through your favorite Netflix shows. Want to be Mike Wheeler and run through Hawkins, Indiana? Maybe. Want to outrun the Demogorgon? Probably not. But do you want to collect some waffles and summon Eleven to help you kick some butt? Definitely!
If your Google Chrome browser has ever crapped out on you, then you’re familiar with the mechanics of an infinite runner already. As the user, you’re responsible for making your character avoid any and all obstacles. Mike Wheeler can run, but Mike Wheeler can’t jump. And that’s where you come in. Unlike Super Mario Run, you don’t hold the spacebar. You either tap, or double-tap for a double-jump. If you land on an obstacle, you die. I’ve tried a couple different ways to crush things, but it’s not working out.
The games become progressively more challenging, too. For example, once you run long enough with Piper Chapman, Pornstache starts to chase after you and flings handcuffs at you. If you don’t time your jumps correctly, it’s back to the cell. And I mean, really well-timed.
Obviously, it’s fun for a couple of minutes. It’s probably best when you’re waiting for Netflix to load up so you can actually watch something.
And yes, it is available on mobile. Except it’s a little harder because you have to tap in the middle of the screen for the best jump:
