The Biggest OMG Moments of the 74th Annual Golden Globes

The Golden Globes were tonight and we’re going to look at the biggest OMG moments of the 74th annual ceremony celebrating film and television!

To start off the Golden Globes, there was an incredible red carpet with Al Roker forgetting that Mel Gibson directed any important movies. But other than that (and the terrible fact that Chris Pine was incorrectly yelled at and people thought he was Pratt), the red carpet was pretty amazing.

Well, except for Hidden Fences. On the red carpet, Jenna Bush seemed to forget that Hidden Figures and Fences were two different movies. Why? Because white people cannot seem to grasp that there are two completely different movies focusing on the lives of African Americans. Everyone is calling Jenna out – and rightfully so.

Opening Monologue

The opening performance was something otherworldly. The La La Land inspired cold open expressed what everyone thought about the film. Basically meaning that everyone is in love with La La Land and the cold open featured pretty much only that.

And you know the best part about the entire opening? It was just filled with technical difficulties. “Prompter down” was pretty much Jimmy Fallon’s continual phrase, and it really set the mood for the entire night.

Upsets

Aaron Taylor Johnson beating out Jeff Bridges and Mahershala Ali for Best Actor in a Supporting Role was the first upset of the entire evening. That’s not to say that Aaron didn’t deserve it. He was incredible in Nocturnal Animals but he was no Jeff in Hell or High Water and Mahershala definitely should have won for Moonlight.

Sterling K. Brown losing to Hugh Laurie was something that no one saw coming. Hugh had an amazing speech with the quote “I don’t mean to be gloomy but it has the words Hollywood, foreign, and press in the title,” but honestly, Sterling K. Brown should have won for his work in The People v. O.J Simpson.

Great Wins

Tracee Ellis Ross has proven herself as an amazing actress time and time again. So to see her finally win for her work was incredible. Her speech was so Tracee and was absolutely honestly and truthful about her struggles and everything that comes with being a woman of color in Hollywood. For instance, Ross was the first black woman since 1983 to win.

It was no surprise that Ryan Gosling and most of the awards it was nominated for was going to La La Land. But his speech was something else entirely. Ryan is famously with Eva Mendes and they have two beautiful daughters together but his speech was so heartfelt and he talked about her willingness to help him do the movie as well as helping her brother who was dying of cancer.

“I feel like the world could do with a few more women at the center of it.” Claire Foy has become a favorite among fans of the show The Crown so when she won, everyone rejoiced. But it helped when Claire decided to thank the women who made her win possible and tell everyone that women should be at the center of things more.

Donald Glover winning for his work in Atlanta was another big win of the night.  “Magic is from people,” Glover said and gave such a heartfelt speech that we all rooted for him. As we should, honestly, because Donald is amazing and he’s going to be an incredible Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo movie.

Again, though we knew that Emma Stone was going to win, there was something so amazing about it. La La Land is a movie for dreamers and she reached out to that part of all of us with her speech.

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds

In a year full of deaths, it is hard to figure out which one hit us the most. But if there was anything more heartbreaking than Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds dying within days of each other, I don’t know of it.

Great moments

In case you missed it, Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield made out when Ryan Gosling won. That is really all we have to say about it. They kissed and honestly, it’s one of the best moments of all time.

Diego Luna speaking Spanish during his presenting should be normal and not an amazing moment. But when he gets up and tells all of Hollywood to be quiet so he can do his job, it makes him an icon and amazing.

Meryl Streep

Viola Davis waited for people to be quiet. You know why she made us all wait? Because you respect Viola Davis and you respect Meryl Streep. And we thought that was going to be the most amazing part of the night. Then Meryl started her speech and everyone suddenly knew who they wanted to be the next president.

And then, in the best moment of the night by far, Moonlight won for the Best Movie for the drama category. Though it was the only win of the night for the film, it is definitely one of the best of the year and deserved that win and so much more. It was a great night and there were plenty of “OMG” moments. But now, we have to wait until next year to get more Golden Globes.
