Project Runway Junior Season 2 Recap: On Your Garde

Hannah Davis is once again a perfectly serviceable Heidi without actually being interesting, either in what she says or what she wears. Christian Siriano, Kelly Osborne and Aya Kanai all show up for work every week like good little soldiers. Note there’s no guest judge–there rarely all for PR:Jr. But the Tim Gunn Save has migrated to PR;Jr, and he will be using it at some point down the line.
Mushy Middle

Izzy & Cartier: The skirt is ludicrous and the top is too ordinary. You would think they two were a team who had sniped at each other and not discussed their top and bottom.

Chelsea & Allie: I love this look, even though it feels a bit Alexander McQueen with the face obscuring neck. (Seriously if you’re a couple of 15 year olds and you’re told avant garde and you hit “McQueen”, you’re doing exceptionally well.) The judges are wowed. Kelly is impressed that it’s also sexy. Christian says it’s a futuristic fencing outfit.

Tieler & Molly: Adults on Project Runway Proper could struggle for a three day challenge and never come up with anything this good for an Avant Garde challenge. For reals yo. This is what makes PR:Jr worth watching. Aya says they should become a design team for life. Christian says it belongs in a museum as a historical archive of future fashion designs. It really is a stunner. They are the top team, and Tieler is given the win for the second week in a row.
Bottom

Chris & Rene: They aimed for avant garde and his “campy goth club outfit.” The cape is ok. The heart is too on the nose. The judges agree–the jacket is the winning piece–the problem is the rest of it is dull as dishwater and not worth looking at. Aya calls it “costumey” and “safe.” Christian calls the heart painting “tacky.”

Hawwaa & A’kai: The top half is Elvira’s wedding dress, the bottom half is a bolt of fabric. The topping it off with Grandpa Munster styling was unnecessary tho. Hawwaa actually tries to lie through it and say the original plan was to split top and bottom, and A’kai won’t cooperate.
Next: Project Runway Junior Season 2 Recap: First Impressions
Rene and Chris are immediately determined to be safe. So the choice comes down to A’kai and Hawwaa. She clearly did not consider that A’kai wowed the hell out of everyone only two episodes ago, and “one day you’re in and the next day you’re out” only goes so far sometimes. But if A’kai thought Tim was going to put in a word for him, that didn’t happen. The judges eliminate him.
But his ploy still worked–because Tim decides this is too unfair and saves him. (He claims if the choice had gone the other way he would have saved Hawwaa, which I doubt.) So much for the Tim Gunn Save. At least we got it out of the way early? And I have another week to get to know our Top Ten and for A’kai and Hawwaa to make a better impression.
