See Laurel’s Return in Spoiler-y New Arrow Trailer
By Amy Woolsey
Before its winter hiatus, Arrow left us with a bewildering and tantalizing cliffhanger. The new trailer gives us a clue as to what might be going on.
More than half a year later, we are still not over Laurel Lance dying. For all its strengths, Arrow never quite seemed to know what to do with the idealistic attorney-turned-vigilante; even after she donned the Black Canary mantle, she mostly played sidekick to Oliver. (The one exception is Season 2, which, coincidentally, remains the show’s best season.) So, Laurel’s demise at the hands of Damien Darhk in Season 4 felt exceptionally cruel.
But could it not be permanent? The most recent episode, “What We Leave Behind”, ended with Oliver returning to the Arrow Cave, only to see someone who appeared to be Laurel standing there, alive. She’d hardly be the first character on the show – or in her family – to be resurrected.
The reality is probably less miraculous, however. A trailer for the midseason premiere, titled “Who Are You?”, hints at what’s really happening. You can watch it below:
At the end of the preview, we see Laurel wreak havoc in the Arrow Cave using her signature Canary Cry. This leads Oliver to realize that this person is “not our Laurel.”
If she isn’t the Laurel we know and love, then who is she?
Most likely, this is Black Siren, Laurel’s villainous doppelgänger from an alternate universe. She appeared on The Flash last season, in the episode “Invincible”, as a member of Zoom’s meta-human army. Until now, though, that show’s universe-hopping, time-traveling shenanigans have had little impact on Arrow, which takes a (slightly) more grounded approach to superheroism.
The trailer also offers a glimpse of the fallout from Oliver’s accidental killing of Billy, Felicity’s boyfriend – a grim twist even by Arrow standards. It seems as though Adrian Chase, the attorney who secretly moonlights as Vigilante, quickly figures out the truth that the Green Arrow was manipulated by Prometheus. Will he and Oliver soon discover each other’s alter egos?
Regardless of what happens next, we’re excited to have Katie Cassidy back on the show, even if she’s playing evil.
