Amazon renews The Man in the High Castle for a third season, as well as finally getting around to replacing the showrunner.
Amazon’s highest rated drama, The Man in The High Castle, has been renewed for a third season. This announcement, which comes via Deadline, is a surprise to few. Amazon’s streaming service has struggled to find themselves a defining hit, and the drama, based on the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name, is the closest thing they have to one. it certainly has the most buzz, with the provocative images of a Nazi occupied America in the 1960s.
The problems with the show behind the scenes, on the other hand, have also been grabbing their share of buzz. The original creator of the show, Frank Spotnitz had been showrunner for the production up until partway through filming Season 2, when he abruptly quit.
At the time, Amazon made noise about Spotnitz life in Europe not gelling with the production filming in Vancouver, but most recognized this as mere cover, since the production basically shut down for weeks in order to figure out what to do. In the end, they limped through to the end of filming, with the individual directors of episodes filling the gaps.
Thankfully that won’t be a problem in Season 3. Amazon has hired Eric Overmyer, who has credits on such productions as St. Elsewhere, Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order and The Wire. His most recent show was Bosch, which was for Amazon. Though it didn’t take off as Man in the High Castle has, it gave him an established relationship with the division. Hopefully one strong enough to withstand the pressures for filming Season 3 on what Amazon recognizes is their most valuable show currently on the roster.
