To some, she’s loony. But to others, she’s the most unique wizard Hogwarts has ever seen. And to everyone, she’ll always be a bit of a question mark. Our friends over at Pottermore helped us remember why Luna Lovegood is the Weirdo Hero we all need.
Luna Lovegood is one of J.K. Rowling’s dottiest characters. ‘She’s slightly out-of-step in many ways,” says Rowling, “Luna is likely to believe 10 impossible things before breakfast.” We couldn’t agree more, and that’s why we heart her so much. Our Pottermore friends came up with seven reasons why they just love Ms. Lovegood using Rowling’s own words from the book. We had a few words of our own, too.

"The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness. Perhaps it was the fact that she had stuck her wand behind her left ear for safekeeping, or that she had chosen to wear a necklace of Butterbeer corks, or that she was reading a magazine upside-down.Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"
Quirky is an Understatement
Luna Lovegood is like a mini Phoebe Buffay with a wand. She’s so “wonderfully weird” that it can be truly inspiring. A person like Luna is unapologetic about who they are. They’ll start any kind of conversation as if you are already old friends. It seems her head is always a bit up in the clouds, but she has a mind that’s always working, thinking of new articles for The Quibbler or wondering where her shoes vanished to.
Although some may see Luna as a total nutcase, you’ll notice she is never truly bothered by that. She doesn’t have time to be weighed down by other people’s drama. Her head is screwed on straight, although it may be slightly askew throughout the day. She’s very much an individual and goes through life seeing the glass half full. The healthy balance between spaciness and groundedness gives us a very relatable character who may not be the easiest to love, but her sweet spirit can (and usually will) win over even the staunches critics.

According to the Harry Potter timeline, Luna grows up to become a famous wizarding naturalist, who studies all sorts of magical creatures all over the globe. Makes sense. She also apparently marries Newt Scamander’s grandson. But no matter what, we knew Luna was on her way to a happily ever after. It’s because she chose to look on the bright side of things, even in the darkest moments. Raise a glass of butterbeer to Luna, the eternally optimistic weirdo who we’re always happy to know.
