Gold (January 27th)

Synopsis: Two men (Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez) travel to the wilds of Indonesia to find gold.

Gold was originally slated for inclusion in my December Must-See article but an eleventh hour release hop pushed it from its Christmas Day release to the end of January. It’s a move that doesn’t bode well for its quality or its Oscar prospects; it is nominated for a Golden Globe for best original song, however. We’ve come a long way since the “McConaugh-naissance” of 2014 that ended with McConaughey getting a Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. There’s no doubt the actor looks game in this movie, and who doesn’t chuckle at the trailer sequence of him petting a tiger? The rest of the cast is equally amazing: rising star Edgar Ramirez plays McConaughey’s right-hand man; Bryce Dallas Howard looks darling as McConaughey’s wife. You also have the likes of Corey Stoll, Stacy Keach and Green Room star Macon Blair in there.

The trailer pays homage, or outright rips off depending on your perspective, the works of David O. Russell and Martin Scorsese. The Wolf of Wall Street vibe coupled with McConaughey’s American Hustle look should entice those looking for some hard hitting drama, a dash of comedy and a mess of prestige, three things woefully missing from January movies.
