Being a Mental Health Advocate

Carrie suffered from bipolar disorder, something that back in the 70s and 80s they didn’t diagnose. So she would use drugs to ‘tame the beast’, in her own words, until she was finally properly diagnosed and treated.

She ended up having to get electro-shock therapy to tame her extreme case of bipolar disorder, but the great thing about Carrie was her willingness to talk about the disease. She would open up to anyone who asked and explain what it was like dealing with the disorder and how she coped.

What’s sad is that people didn’t understand what Carrie was trying to do with the drugs in the first place. She had such a rough go of it because everyone just saw her as a drug addict; they didn’t know of all the mental backlash she was dealing with.

So when Carrie finally got her mind figured out as best she could, she made sure to speak out and help educate those around her. Carrie Fisher was so important and made everyone know of how important it was to have your mind as healthy as it can be.

Carrie went through a lot and we owe so much to her and her advocacy to making sure everyone knew about mental health.
