Pop

In the last few years, pop music has gone through a sort of renaissance. Sure, we still have the ever-formulaic music that made Britney and Christina pop princesses, but more and more pop music is expanding, converging on the edges of neighboring genres like indie, hip-hop, and country.

Much of the music we hear on the radio every day can be considered “pop” music. “Pop” itself comes from the word “popular”, so it makes sense. With streaming services like Spotify, Google Play, Pandora, and Amazon Music easily accessible, more and more music is considered “popular”, even if it might also fit in some other genre. Alternative music, for example, has gone from alternative to mainstream in many places, my hometown included.

My playlist is pop-heavy for this very reason. Here are this year’s pop songs for the playlist:

  • “Starboy” by The Weeknd
  • “Work from Home” by Fifth Harmony feat. Ty Dolla $ign
  • “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars
  • “Formation” by Beyonce
  • “Perfect Illusion” by Lady Gaga
  • “Don’t Wanna Know” by Maroon 5 feat. Kendrick Lamar
  • “Cheap Thrills” by Sia
  • “Sit Still, Look Pretty” by Daya
  • “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake
  • “All Time Low” by Jon Bellion
  • “The Greatest” by Sia
  • “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars
  • “Cake By the Ocean” by DNCE
  • “You Don’t Own Me” by Grace feat. G-Eazy
  • “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten
  • “NO” by Meghan Trainor
