8. Raul Esparza
Raul is famous for a lot of things, but we’re just going to talk about “Being Alive” from the Stephen Sondheim musical Company. Because if you ask any Broadway fan to show you their favorite Raul song, this is the one they choose.
Don’t believe me? Just check out how many different versions are on YouTube of it because everyone loves Raul and his rendition of the Sondheim ballad. Company finds Bobby alone when all of his friends are married off with families. It is his birthday and they ask him to make a wish.
What does he wish for? You guessed it, he wished to have someone to hold him too close and someone to hurt him too deep. The thing about Sondheim is that you have to be aware of the emotional impact of the song you’re singing, and Raul just gets it.
So, he’s on this list because he truly understand the mastery of Sondheim and he looks pretty amazing while singing it. Raul, you’re great in Law & Order, but we’d like it if you came back to Broadway and sang until our hearts were content. Or just come to our houses and sing us to sleep. Your choice!
