You’re the Worst

You’re The Worst is straight-forward in its characterization of its main characters. It says it right there in the title. Gretchen and Jimmy are absolutely the most self-centered jerks on the planet, but this show gets points for its honesty.

You’re The Worst follows two awful LA hipsters as they try to navigate their way around a romance that is practically perfect … for them. They’re selfish, narcissistic, narrow-minded, and their substance abuse is often legitimately concerning. Quite literally, they’re all of our holiday alter-egos. They’re surrounded by a group of equally terrible friends and acquaintances that produce a cast of characters that I love to mock. They kind of make me feel a little better about my personality quirks.

If you designed two characters to embody the very opposite of the holiday spirit, Jimmy and Gretchen (Chris Geere and Aya Cash, respectively) would be our choices. They have no obligations to follow cultural norms or the rules of polite society, and the freedom from it is glorious. If, by now, you’re weary from the fake smiling, the fraudulent gratitude for another terrible gift, and the unyielding Christmas music, then You’re the Worst is exactly what you need.
