Season 2: RJ’s Burton-esque Bellhop

Honestly, this was the challenge that put the show on the map. Face Off Season 1 was interesting, but ultimately a little on the generic side, due to lack of sponsors and any ability to get rights to refer to other works in pop culture. Season 2 finally featured the first challenge to be based on another artist’s brand of work: Tim Burton. The “Burton-esque” challenge as it was called, did so well in reactions on social media that SyFy aired it over and over, in hopes of catching as much of their regular audience as possible. By the end of the season, Face Off was on a ratings roll.

Now, much will be made of Rayce’s win in this famous “Burton-esque” challenge for his self playing cellist. And rightly so. That look, coming late in Season 2, was part of what powered him to the eventual win, and an invite back a few seasons later to be a mentor judge. But my favorite, hands down, was that of RJ’s Bellhop with a literal chest of drawers. it looked like it could have walked out of Beetlejuice. Johnny Depp wishes he played this character once upon a time.
