20. The Muppet Christmas Carol somehow still inspires hope

This is perhaps the most magical thing about the entirely of The Muppet Christmas Carol. At the end of most so-called “inspirational” movies, I’m left feeling like even more of a cold-hearted monster than I do in my day-to-day life. Sentimentality appears to produce an allergic reaction within me. However, instead of getting hives, I write mean things about Bean Bunny on the internet. When presented with sweetness and light, I reach for a glass of lemon juice, metaphorically speaking.

Maybe that doesn’t make much sense to you. I am, after all, an admitted Grinch. You are all probably much nicer people than I could hope to be.

Yet, maybe The Muppet Christmas Carol could redeem me a little bit. You see, by the end of the film, I almost feel like I could… be nice to someone? Wrap a gift? Smile like a normal human being?

It’s something about the combination of music, Muppets, and Michael Caine’s adorably bad grandpa dancing. When the camera pans out at the end, showing the Cratchit home filled to the brim with friendly, cuddly Muppets, I almost find that I have hope for our species. Maybe it would be a little better if we were all anthropomorphized bears or frogs (I would definitely be a pig), but close enough.
