16. Belinda and Betina and Miss Piggy, Finally

Hey, what could be better than Miss Piggy? She is a beloved Muppet, full of sass, self-worth, and a wickedly effective judo chop.

How would you feel about two more of her? Enter Belinda and Betina, the twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Cratchit. There are plenty of questions to be had here. Why are all the family boys frogs and the girls pigs? How does that work, um, genetically speaking? (Don’t think about it too hard.)

Their first scene is also the first in the film for Miss Piggy. It takes us nearly an hour to get to her. Disappointing, but remember that Frank Oz, who voices Piggy, also does the voice acting and puppeteering for what seems like a million other Muppets.

When Piggy does show up it’s pretty great. She’s scarfing down chestnuts and confusing her twin daughters. She calls Kermit “Cratchie”. She also launches into a screed against Scrooge at the dinner table, unaware that he’s there in spirit form. It’s lovely to see Piggy and her little doppelgangers (supposedly created as a gentle way to make fun of Frank Oz’s work). I only wish we saw more of them.
