2. “The Strike” – Seinfeld, Season 9

It’s the holiday season as only Seinfeld can do, especially for a show that isn’t all about the sentimental or sappy. This episode takes the spirit of giving and completely turns it on his head into something superficial.

There’s always a lot going on in Seinfeld episodes, as Larry David is the master of connecting plotlines. This is the episode that introduced us to the concept of Festivus, which in some circles is referred to as “the perfect secular theme for an all-inclusive December gathering.” As much as this show tried to whip societal norms into a frenzy, there’s things that are easily relatable, even to this day. We’ve all received lame gifts (like a donation to The Human Fund), and don’t like people for surface-level reasons (a denim vest or bad lighting on the porch).

Seinfeld never really had any form of a sentimental episode. Instead, it was a show that just highlighted all the rather unsightly parts of humanity. Each character wasn’t afraid to call out the problems they all had with one another, which is why Frank Costanza began the Festivus holiday in the first place. We can giggle about it, but we just think the holidays aren’t necessarily the best timing to have a bluntly honest conversation. Thankfully, Seinfeld continues to take care of that for us every December 23rd.
