20. “Sabrina’s Christmas Wish” – Bojack Horseman, Special Episode

Bojack Horseman is one of those brilliantly written shows that hits a little too close to home sometimes. So the thought of a Christmas special Bojack-style is only a little unsettling. However, we’re treated to one of the most meta-episodes the Netflix show could muster. We finally get to see the entirety of the show “Horsin’ Around,” Bojack’s claim to fame, and something he constantly tries to talk up to anyone who would listen.

This is a Christmas episode that breaks all the rules (and the fourth wall) with considerable ease. Bojack and Todd watch the Christmas special, providing a little MST3K-esque humor along the way (which includes a very enthusiastic audience member).  We are stuck watching Sabrina’s Christmas Wish where the youngest Horseman orphan has to learn what the true meaning Christmas is in a typical 80’s cheesy fashion. And by that we mean she doesn’t even know what “a Santa” is. We’re treated to cringey sitcom jokes that are like their own little Christmas gift every time they’re dropped on screen. We’ll also never be opposed to quintessential audience “oohs” and “ahhs” at every appropriate moment.

Todd makes a great point.  Christmas specials aren’t about them necessarily being “good”. Instead, it’s just nice to have someone to share all the holiday cheer with. Todd and Bojack sat there, sharing this episode together as the friends Horseman always has trouble admitting he has. We’re glad Bojack decided to join in on all the holiday fun, even if things strike a painful note sometimes.
