19. “Ludachristmas” – 30 Rock, Season 2

This episode of 30 Rock really gives us an insight into Liz Lemon’s family life, and ends with the comfort of knowing even the nicest families have their own share of problems. This entire tales turns the meaning of Christmas upside-down, ending on a heartwarming moment amidst utter chaos and insanity.

Liz’s mom and dad are supportive…maybe too supportive. It’s enough to rattle Jack ‘s boots, since his own mother is such a nasty woman. We’re also treated to the one-off character Mitch, played by Andy Richter. He’s a 40 year old man stuck as a 17 year old in the 80’s, thanks to a skiing accident from December 7, 1985. Although things seem to be going well and Liz is determined to have a nice time with her family, it all invariably goes wrong thanks to some misunderstandings and unresolved issues being forced into light.

As with any holiday, the “true meaning of Christmas” may be lost on some, especially if one searches too hard for it. Liz and her writing staff learn (we think) that Christmas doesn’t always have to look pretty and polished. Sometimes the holidays are just silly, which is what makes this episode such a fun ride to rewatch around Christmas. We also get to hear this line that’ll be forever burned into our brains: “It wouldn’t be a lemon party without ol’ Dick.” Genius.
