20. Broadchurch
Like Death Comes to Pemberley, Broadchurch has the story of a murder at its heart. More specifically, it concerns the investigation into the murder of Danny Latimer, an 11-year-old living in a British coastal town. Our main characters are Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, played by David Tennant and Olivia Colman. You’ll recognize him from Doctor Who and her from The Night Manager, and you may come just on the strength of their names. Luckily, neither of them disappoint at all. (Whovians will also recognize Arthur Darvill, who plays the local reverend.)
Broadchurch sports a tightly-plotted mystery and an excellent look at how a small town reacts when it’s put under the microscope of a highly-publicized murder. Although the second season isn’t quite as critically loved as the first, it’s by no means terrible. It’s simply hard to live up to the critical acclaim that the first season received.
This series has a TV-14 rating and has a medium-sized commitment required to get through all 16 episodes in 4 days. Additionally, you’ll be ready for Series 3 when it airs next year.
This series will simply keep you guessing — watch with caution, lest you spout your theories and find someone who will inadvertently give you spoilers.
