4. Planet Earth

Earth is pretty wild, to put it mildly and also to make a terrible pun. (Sorry.) The BBC put five years into filming this series, Planet Earth, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. David Attenborough narrates each of the episodes. While you relax on your couch, you’ll visit the poles of the earth, mountains, jungles, deserts, oceans, and more, all while learning about how different parts of nature interact with each other.

Although learning something might not appeal to you, we have two reasons why you should watch Planet Earth over the holiday weekend. First, it’s absolutely gorgeous. Remember, it took five years to create, and that effort shows. (That also means that it makes for a great watch even after you’ve overloaded on cookies or other tasty treats.) Second, even Netflix calls it a “family-friendly” series, which means that grandparents, teens, and young kids alike might all enjoy something about Planet Earth.

Additionally, you can prepare for the sequel series, creatively named Planet Earth II. It’s already aired in the UK, but Americans will get to see it starting on Jan. 27 on BBC America.

Currently, Netflix has the entire first series available, which consists of 11 episodes of about an hour each. In other words, you could have it running in the background one day and drop in and out when you need a break.
