7. War Dogs

I’ve heard from quite a few critics who enjoyed Todd Phillips’ audacious, bro-riddled paean to war profiteering, War Dogs. I’ll only remember it for marking my debut to this fine site you’re on. Phillips has made a career off presenting dudes at their worst, but films like Old School and The Hangover had ample laughs to go along with them. War Dogs is Phillips’ attempts to become the new Adam McKay with a bright, bombastic look at a serious subject a la The Big Short. However, The Big Short actually intended to make audiences angry at the government; War Dogs just makes us angry at ourselves for spending money on it.

Jonah Hill and Miles Teller at their douchiest play twentysomething arms dealers who fancy themselves as Scarface with AK-47s.That should be funnier than it is, instead we’re treated to horrific foreign stereotypes spewed by two of the most entitled white guys out there. The laughs are non-existent or appeal to those rocking “Make America Great Again” hats. If Hell or High Water is considered the best movie to appeal to Trump voters, then War Dogs must be their Comedy of the Year. And a quick shout-out to poor Ana de Armas, who had quite the introduction to 2016 – playing tortured wives/girlfriends in two terrible films (this and Hands of Stone).
