Not every movie can be good. In fact, some are downright atrocious. Here are ten of the absolute worst movies released in 2016.

There are critics who believe a Worst of the Year list is unnecessary. Why give movies that are already bad more publicity by being on a list people view out of morbid curiosity? It’s low-hanging fruit. I understand all that.

But I maintain life’s too short to spend time on bad movies, and I like to know what to avoid. I’m all for a “so bad it’s good” movie but the ten films below are the worst of the worst (wonder if one of the films on this list knew of its presence in advance?).

That’s not to say every bad movie made the cut. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice got a reprieve because my little brother and I bonded over our mutual distaste for it. (I don’t think Zack Snyder saw the film as one to bring families together.) The same can be said for X-Men: Apocalypse. Opulent throwbacks like Rules Don’t Apply and Cafe Society were vanity projects for their geriatric directors but looked pretty enough to slip past. Gods of Egypt was spared because I turned it off halfway through.
