It’s been over five years since the credits rolled on the final Harry Potter flick. Now we’re fondly looking back at our favorite characters, and recasting some roles just for fun.
The world of Harry Potter is something that can never be duplicated. The series has taken us on a such an emotional roller coaster that we can’t imagine it any other way. But what if we had a chance to recast all eight movies with some of our favorite actors and actresses? It’s not that we don’t love the casting, but it’s a great thought exercise, isn’t it? We decided to answer that question, whittling our list down to 50 choice characters. (Yes, it really was that hard. Do you ever think about how many characters there are in this series beyond the trio and the first few professors you think of?)
But first, we had to toss out the rule book. This list is just for funsies. We’ve got roles that are genderbent, ones that transcend race, and cast in all different directions. And just for convenience’s sake, we’re going to keep all the character names as is. You may see a lady play a male role or vice versa. Don’t fret.
Have fun and try to picture these actors in your favorite Harry Potter roles!

1. Donald Glover as Harry Potter
via Warner Bros Pictures
Harry Potter is one of the bravest characters ever written down, and it takes a considerable talent to rein in all the awesomeness. While Daniel Radcliffe did an amazing job that we’ll always be thankful for, we think Donald Glover could bring a bit more of a softer and sillier edge to the role.
Mr. Glover is a multi-faceted individual. He writes, he acts, he does stand-up, plus he raps under the stage name Childish Gambino. His sense of humor shines in every role he takes on, especially in his new FX comedy-drama Atlanta. He’s much like Harry in that his many sides and talents work flawlessly together to make things happen.
With the weight of the wizarding world on his shoulders, Harry doesn’t normally have a lot of time for laughter. Some of that dry British wit pops in from time to time, but Donald has an amazing knack for comedic delivery that may brighten up a relatively dark character. We think it’s time to get him into a spot where he can combine humor with some wand waving action too. That may or may not include a little time with the ladies of Hogwarts; Donald is a very charming guy after all, with a certain joie de vivre that’s quite appealing.
2. Daisy Ridley as Harry Potter
via Warner Bros Pictures
Who says a hero has to be a man? Truthfully, no one. No one says that. Which is why we think Daisy Ridley would be a perfect Chosen One to defeat the Dark Lord when he returns. She already wowed us with her portrayal of strong-willed Rey in The Force Awakens, and she can certainly bring the same level of panache to the titular role of Harry Potter.
Daisy’s Star Wars role shares a similar character arc with Harry. They both started out believing they were utterly alone in the world, only to find they hold the secrets to infinite mystical powers. While Harry has the wizarding world, Rey’s got the freakin’ Force. It gets to a point where her previously unknown powers grow so strong, she single-handedly bests Sith lord Kylo Ren in a lightsaber battle. Swap out the saber for a wand, and we’ll be in business.
She can give us a portrayal of Mister Potter that can grow and transform the more she learns to hone her magical powers. Rey starts to get a handle of The Force on her own, but under the tutelage of the Hogwarts staff, we see Daisy being a perfect Lady Who Lived, with a cute lightning scar to boot.

3. Emilia Clarke as Hermione Granger
Warner Bros. Pictures
Hermione is never afraid to tell it like it is, much like her real-life counterpart Emma Watson. This seems like a trait shared by Emilia Clarke and her biggest on-screen persona Queen Daenerys Targaryen. Both of these women are so strong, they’d be able to completely switch up their roles and none of us would be the wiser.
Emilia has a way of carrying herself while in character. The entirety of the world may rest upon her shoulders, but she never shows her fear. Hermione also has this quality. She’s responsible, smart, and confident in her knowledge bank, allowing her to become someone her boys can always count on.
While Dany has no specific magical power, there is something mysterious about the Targaryen bloodline. Emilia can deliver a character who knows the extent of her power, but also knows when to unleash it. Like Hermione, she uses it towards the greater good, rather than for self-gain only. It may be odd to say both these women think they know everything, but it’s because they actually do. They know how to be leaders and they take pragmatic approaches to issues. We think Emilia Clarke could really nail the Hermione role, and we do see a nice picture of Emma Watson sitting pretty on the Iron Throne.

4. Ed Sheeran as Ron Weasley
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
We went with the dorky redhead vibe on this one. It just felt right. Ed Sheeran encompasses the idea of a One Man Band. He comes off very self-sufficient, which is a trait one has to pick up when you’re surrounded by a family as large as the Weasleys.
Though no one can pull off ‘frazzled’ like Rupert Grint can, both he and Ed share the same kind of ‘adorkable’ vibe. You either want to be their friend or just hug them for being so gosh-darned cute. We’d like to see Ed pull away from the nice guy role for a second and capture all the realities of growing up Ron Weasley had to go through. He’s the subject of a lot of painfully awkward moments, but we think Ed could handle them with great aplomb.
Ron is a character who, at times, has a lot of maturing to do. He can come off kind of whiny, and the years-long tug-of-war with his feelings for Hermione was sometimes agonizing to witness. However, we won’t fault him for this, we just think Ed has a nice sense of self-awareness that can sharpen Ron up. And maybe if he wants to fully get his feelings for Hermione on lockdown, he could sing her a song he wrote for her as he strums along on guitar. Instant love bomb.

5. Jon Heder as Neville Longbottom
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
Goofy, kinda cute, and has a pleasant disposition. I’m not just describing myself, but also Jon Heder. He seems to gravitate towards roles that are fun and silly, like Napoleon Dynamite or Jimmy McElroy (Blades of Glory). But there’s also a sweet spirit about him that exemplifies how humble he is. That’s how I’ve always seen Neville. He’s a huge dork, but he’s not one to brag. When the chips are down, he’s the one who stands up in the face of danger. So can Jon Heder make new waves alongside Matthew Lewis? We think it sounds like a plan.
Neville is always the bumbling sidekick, something Jon Heder could pull off. He captures audiences either in a lead role or a supporting one. Despite the appearance of weakness, though, they have no trouble commanding a crowd. Guys like these have a sort of quiet confidence about them, where they’d rather zip the lip and notice things from afar. They’ll only approach when they’re confident they’ll get a positive response.
Jon Heder can play characters who are headstrong and would rather hear someone out instead of acting like a know-it-all. He’ll be a nice addition to Gryffindor house. We can see him hanging out in the Herbology greenhouses and honing those skills like Neville is known to do.

6. Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Luna Lovegood
Warner Bros. Pictures
During the Rifftrax for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Bill Corbett said this: “Luna Lovegood, really just a good ol’ fashioned stoner.” He was making a joke, but he may not be too far off. Luna is that aberrant friend you always have in your group, though initially you’re not sure why. She’s the friend who says odd things from time to time, but they’re such fascinating, fun, and fiercely loyal characters that you have to keep them around. Enter Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who burst into our hearts as Fogell in 2007’s Superbad. He was this exact friend to a tee, making him an ideal candidate for the Lovegood role.
Luna is usually off in her own little world, taking care of personal projects along the way. Though they may seem odd to an outsider, her skills are surprisingly helpful to her friends. Mintz-Plasse’s character from Superbad acts similarly, so we know he can pull it off. It was Fogell’s idea to get a fake ID and provide the much-needed booze for the party. He braved the liquor store and run-ins with the cops, because he knows the importance of commitment. Though Luna’s trials and tribulations at Hogwarts are much more life-and-death, we think it’d be fun to see him try and take on the challenge. He is McLovegood.

7 & 8. Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell as Fred and George Weasley
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
Okay, they’re not twins, nor are they even related, I know. But these guys have the potential to have just as much onscreen chemistry as the Phelps twins. Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell worked together for years, first at Chicago improv theater Second City, and earlier seasons of The Daily Show. (They also voiced SNL’s The Ambiguously Gay Duo, a fun tidbit). So if they had to pull off characters who can’t help but say things at the same time, we think they’d do it with flying colors.
Both Fred and George are huge jokesters, not unlike Colbert and Carell. They work together in tandem and bounce ideas off each other all the time. While it can lead to a lot of sibling infighting, it’s okay because at the end of the day, they can put their differences aside and continue moving forward. In the entertainment industry, it’s rare to see such a long working relationship between actors. There’s a huge amount of respect and admiration for one another that has to come into play, something we think could make the Colbert and Carell duo one of a brotherly love.
They also have the exact same initials, something Fred and George don’t have. Maybe they’re more of the same person than we think.

9. Zendaya as Ginny Weasley
Image via Warner Brothers Pictures
We watched as Ginny Weasley grew from a girl who’d run and hide at the sight of a boy, into a strong, powerful young witch (who occasionally gets to smooch the Chosen One). Zendaya’s popularity is on the rise and it’s only getting stronger, making her a perfect fit for the role of someone who doesn’t mess around.
Zendaya is a very stunning woman, and she’s one of those Disney child actors who has been able to escape that stigma unscathed. She’s a triple threat as an actor, singer, and dancer, so you know she’s very busy, much like Ginny. Keeping occupied with so many different things means you don’t have time for frivolous nonsense. Zendaya has no time for people who’ve tried to tear her down online, and Ginny won’t tolerate anyone who tries to jerk her chain (she learned her lesson with that brush with Tom Riddle’s diary).
Ginny is so much more than Harry’s love interest. She is one of the more self-confident characters in the Harry Potter universe, making her an independent soul. We see this same kind of self-awareness in Zendaya, and think she’d be able to grab onto a role like Ginny, really getting the chance to make it her own.

10. Aubrey Plaza as Draco Malfoy
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
It’s hard to pull off the face of pure evil, but Tom Felton has a gift to do just that. Know who else does? Aubrey Plaza. She’s absolutely beautiful, but her large cat-like eyes hold a lot of mystery behind them. Could she hold the secrets of the Death Eaters in them as well? We think so.
Aubrey comes from an improvisational acting background, so you know she’s good at thinking on her toes. Draco is definitely not that. He’s more of a spineless lump of jelly who is all bark and no bite. And while Tom Felton played that role extremely well, it would be fun to see a slick-talking Draco who’s unafraid to offer a smart word back at anyone who crosses his/her path.
Despite her admittedly expressionless face, Aubrey can deliver a character who always sniffs out a good time, even in the crummiest of circumstances. She’d be able to lift the sheen of doom and gloom that constantly surrounds Slytherin House, and bring a sense of jerkery with a lighter twist. Plus, Slytherins are only funny to other Slytherins. They need someone who paints comedy with a wider brush. If Aubrey is willing to dye her hair blonde, I’d say we have a winner.

11. Sir Patrick Stewart as Albus Dumbledore
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
When Richard Harris passed on, it seemed a daunting task to replace such a strong acting talent for one of the greatest wizards the world has ever seen. Michael Gambon was able to fill some pretty big shoes when he took on the Dumbledore role, but we’d also like to see Sir Patrick Stewart give it a try.
Anyone who has seen Star Trek: The Next Generation knows how much of a command Sir Patrick holds. The strong, authoritarian voice would be perfect for simmering down Hogwarts students when they’re going off the rails. Dumbledore commands a big audience, and is the only wizard Voldemort ever feared. It’s a heavy burden to hold as a character, but Patrick is definitely up to the challenge. He’s a guy you can tell is having fun with life and all the projects he takes on. That’s kind of how Dumbledore is, too. He’s trying to take on the darkest forces in the world, all the while keeping things as light and airy as possible.
And truth be told, Stewart has actually lamented the fact that he never starred in a Harry Potter film while talking to Stephen Colbert in 2014. It was an opportunity missed, we think, but there’s plenty of Fantastic Beasts movies to go around.

12. Pete Wentz as Professor Severus Snape
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
Let’s be real, here: Snape is one of the original Emo boys. Even though we find out later there’s a whole lot of depth behind that facade, just for the sake of the superficial, let’s get Pete Wentz in there. My former high school self will thank you.
While Fall Out Boy wasn’t my top choice when I was an angsty little teen, bassist Pete Wentz seemed to upstage everyone else in the band. He was far more popular than the frontman. Why? He stood out. He could make a name for himself, and he made it look effortless in the process. That’s kind of how someone like Snape has to be. He’s a dark, kind of gloomy and mysterious guy, but that’s why people pay attention to him. He’s interesting and has no problems playing devil’s advocate, which weirdly makes him well-respected in several circles. It took him a while to get there, but he never gave up on promises he’s made to himself, and to Lily.
This is where I’m going to apologize for calling Pete Wentz a jerk for many years. He seems very comfortable in his own skin, and he’s living his life on his terms. It’s an admirable quality. And although no one can master the role like Alan Rickman (rest in peace), we still think it’d be fun to see Pete try.
Thanks for the Memories, Mr. Rickman.

13. Colin Firth as Professor Minerva McGonagall
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Dame Maggie Smith nailed this role, so it was a little tricky coming up with a replacement that would match the woman we also know as the Dowager Countess thanks to Downton Abbey. However, we settled on Colin Firth, who at first can bring a somewhat cold character to the forefront, though we eventually find a heart of gold hidden underneath.
Professor McGonagall is a no-nonsense kind of teacher. She’s strict and to the point, which is a fantastic quality to have, and something we think Colin can pull off quite well. Both he and Smith are skilled at playing characters who command a great deal of respect. And it’s not easy to still come off as approachable while operating a high level of authority. Whether he’s playing the King of England or a dogged nice guy looking to heal his wounded heart, we see Colin taking to his new teaching role with ease. He’ll be able to deliver a character where the warmth lies far beneath the reserved exterior. It’s just a matter of finding what key unlocks it. He can do this all the while keeping a calm and cool head about him.
And for a teacher like Minerva McGonagall, the love of her entire Hogwarts family is what has kept her pressing forward.

14. Jon Hamm as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart
Professor Gilderoy Lockhart (KENNETH BRANAGH) in Warner Bros. Pictures’ movie, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Photo by Peter Mountain
Jon Hamm is one of those diverse actors who can play a straight-shooting important executive, or a straight up goofball. Professor Gilderoy Lockhart is a guy who is absolutely the latter, but tries to pretend he’s the former. And he’s not above using memory charms to get his way. This perfect balance of hamminess is what would make Jon Hamm a great fit for this role.
Anyone who is familiar with Mad Men knows Don Draper to be a man of many secrets. Gilderoy’s full of secrets too, it’s just that they highlight what an actual phony he is. Still, Jon has the ability to give a character with a neatly polished exterior, but all the while they’re battling and toiling with their inner cornish pixies. It would be a role he could have fun with. He would have no problem portraying a guy with a massive, overblown ego, much like in his uncredited role in Bridesmaids. Admiration is more important than any actual information to Gilderoy, and that bravado quickly fades away when things get a little too real.
Kenneth Branagh was a great fit, but Jon Hamm can bring a bit more of a broodingly dark side to Gilderoy, giving us a man whose smarminess may ultimately be his downfall.

15. Bill Hader as Professor Remus Lupin
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Professor Lupin is an interesting fellow. He’s obviously smart but carries with him a terrible secret that could actually put Hogwarts students in considerable danger. This is kind of why be brings a bit of a raincloud with him wherever he goes. We think someone like Bill Hader can pull things together for Lupin long enough to where he’s making a few people laugh along the way, without having to use the Riddikulus spell.
Despite Bill largely playing comedic roles, each character takes on its own persona. No two Haders are alike, so it would be interesting to see what he can bring to a character who’s kind of a downer. Throughout it all, Lupin is still a loyal friend to everyone in the Order of the Phoenix. He helps push back against the forces of evil that are threatening all of wizardkind, even at the cost of his own life. Bill is normally the straight-man supportive character, so he can enter this role flawlessly, even though we want him to come away unscathed in our movie.
Plus, it’d be kind of awesome to see Bill as a werewolf. Bill Weasley isn’t the only Bill who should get some werewolfish qualities.

16. Pam Ferris as Professor Dolores Umbridge
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Remember Pam Ferris? She played The Trunchbull in the 1996 movie Matilda, and to any grade-schooler watching at the time, she was bring-your-brown-pants terrifying. Now imagine her wielding a wand instead of a hammer throw weight.
Dolores Umbridge is the very face of education gone wrong. Instead of teaching, she’s indoctrinating. She wants order in the classroom instead of an environment where students’ minds can grow. That sounds an awful lot like Crunchem Hall Elementary School, where Agatha Trunchbull rules the roost. Pam Ferris hid behind brute strength, not realizing wit and cleverness will always be a stronger tool to use. Students hone these skills in places of learning, but they can’t do it when their minds are constantly being shut down, or locked away in the chokey.
Umbridge may have had the Ministry on her side, but it was a highly corrupt organization anyway. There’s always going to be a villain for every protagonist, and Umbridge is especially scary, since she comes across in such a dainty manner. Pam could easily bring a hardened edge to Ol’ Toadface, giving us an even more sadistic version of Umbridge if that’s possible. Unfortunately she can’t throw any students over the fence by their pigtails. Wizards can fly if they’ve got a broom handy.

17. Ed Norton as Sirius Black
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Ed Norton is no stranger to playing men who are routinely involved in criminal acts and have noted dual personalities. Enter Sirius Black, who flat out tells Harry, “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us.” Not only does Sirius learn to control his once massive temper (being falsely locked inside Azkaban would mess anyone up), he takes this dual nature into the realm of other species. Given Ed’s familiarity in the split personality department, we think he’d handle this role exceptionally well.
Sirius is anything but your typical Gryffindor, even though he exemplifies a lot of their traits, like fierce loyalty. He tends to act on impulse and do things that feel natural to his character, but may also get him further into trouble, such as being framed for murders he never actually committed. Ed would have no problem portraying such an intelligent character with a dark and deeply troubled past, who’s constantly on the path toward redemption.
Once Sirius breaks out of that prison, we get to see his transformation from psychotic madman into one of the most trusted men in the ranks of the Order. It takes a lot of self-forgiveness to get there as well, which is what we see Ed’s characters struggle with a lot. And he’s been all over the spectrum, from an aggressive soap-maker to a former White Supremacist. For a high-emotion character, you’re going to want to go with a pro like Ed Norton to pull it off.

18. Kris Jenner as Lord Voldemort
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Okay, maybe this is a little mean. Maybe it’s not very nice to compare an ordinary woman to the manifestation of pure evil but I’m doing it anyway. Voldemort is one of literature’s most awful characters, and darn it if Kris Jenner doesn’t sometimes take on the role of someone I just love to hate.
All Voldemort ever wanted was legitimacy in his power. He would stop at nothing to get all the attention in the entire world until all of humanity was bowing down at his feet. Thankfully, he never fully got there, but Kris Jenner is certainly trying to achieve a similar goal. Being matriarch of what some unironically call “America’s First Family” isn’t easy, but their relevancy grows the more they stay in the spotlight. Sometimes, that comes at the expense of a never-ending stream of drama and quick cash-grabs here and there.
Of course the Kardashians have never done anything as dastardly as ruthlessly killing people, but let’s just say that’s one thing Voldy’s got on them. There’s no telling what people are capable of doing when they’re motivated by dark forces. Voldemort tried to form an army to take over the world. Kris Jenner allegedly leaked her own daughter’s sex tape to achieve more widespread fame. Which is worse?

19. Tim Curry as Bellatrix Lestrange
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Yeah, we see you shivering with…anticipation at the thought of this one. This helps if you picture a younger Tim Curry going forward, because unfortunately he suffered a stroke in 2012 and is now confined to a wheelchair. But the decades of incredible acting roles he gave the world aren’t lost on us.
Tim makes the evil and sadistic side of things look like fun. He’s always one to offer a cheshire grin while gleefully torturing his victim-of-the-moment. Bellatrix acts in a similar fashion, thanks to the performance by none other than Helena Bonham Carter. Though Bella is far more violent than a majority of Curry’s characters (with perhaps the exclusion of Pennywise), he would be able to bring a certain sophistication to a character whose entire goal in life is to serve the whims of her dark master. In most of Curry’s roles, he tends to act on things solo, not finding any need to answer to a higher power. It would be interesting to see him step outside his comfort zone, and be a loyal servant rather than in a commanding leadership role.
Though his days in front of the camera are largely behind him, he still does a ton of voice acting, so a CGI Currytrix is an entirely feasible possibility.

20 & 21. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Rudd as Molly and Arthur Weasley
Courtesy: Warner Bros.
These two have been cast together in at least five movies. Yes, that sometimes includes playing a loving couple, or at least a pair who likes to make out. They have a wonderful onscreen chemistry with one another, as do Molly and Arthur Weasley. The red-haired brigade has a sweet, warm nature about them that is very welcoming. While Elizabeth Banks and Paul Rudd may not be the warmest couple in a century, they have the chance to get there and be a fun part of the wizarding world.
Molly and Arthur’s relationship is one where the lady of the household is the one with the final say. The female is more of the tough, nurturing disciplinarian, while the male is the fun, primary breadwinning dad. These kinds of dynamics show up in roles where Elizabeth and Paul play a couple, most notably Role Models. Though they were just a couple, she was the more mature one, and had to let her man go off and do what he needed to do to find himself. That’s probably why Molly lets Arthur entertain his strange fascination with Muggle appliances.
We haven’t seen Elizabeth have any onscreen children with Paul yet, but we think they could handle a whole big pile of Weasleys if it came down to it.

22. Christoph Waltz as Lucius Malfoy
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Lucius Malfoy goes from a very real threat to Harry Potter’s well-being to a washed-up ex-con who fell from grace after picking the wrong wizard to let down. Sticking someone as talented as Christoph Waltz in that role would be a nice parallel to some of his American roles, like Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds.
The Malfoys are a family who just looks evil. The bleach blond hair and the extremely cold demeanors should be your first tip off. But the thing about Christoph’s characters is that while he can play a diabolical man, he is outwardly very charismatic and likable. You almost want to root for his character in Basterds, even though he’s committed unspeakable war crimes. It makes the audience want to give him a second glance, although you know doing so may still land you on the same conclusion that, yep, the Malfoys ain’t that great.
But evil isn’t always ‘fun’ like Christoph makes it out to be. Luckily, the Malfoys actually have a strong sense of family, even if they rely heavily on talking themselves up versus taking any action. Either way, Waltz could bring an entirely new spin to a character who always thought he’d have a ticket to ride on Easy Street.

23. Justin Bieber as Colin Creevey
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Cheap shot, I know. But both of these little boys annoy me in different ways. I wasn’t a fan of Colin Creevey when he popped up in the books or on my screen. He still has a lot to learn about the world of journalism. One of them is to not interfere with the subjects you’re photographing. This is why Justin Bieber may be a good fit for this role, since random articles about how much of a jerk he’s being to his fans interfere with my day too.
If I had to pick some redeeming qualities that justify this recasting, I’d say it’s very cool that both boys are self-made. Colin seems to have grasped the nuances of the art of photojournalism, while Bieber actually taught himself how to play multiple instruments at a young age. That’s a highly advanced skill and I’m not above giving credit where credit is due.
Sadly, Colin never made it out from the Battle of Hogwarts, and we swear this isn’t something we actively want to happen to the Biebs. It’s just all part of J.K. Rowling’s natural story progression. Maybe the worst thing that would happen to Justin as Colin would be he falls off a stage somewhere and bumps his head. That’s all.

24. Shaquille O’Neill as Professor Rubeus Hagrid
via Warner Bros. Pictures
The height alone should be a tipoff. Let’s call him Shaqrid. Though Kazaam showed us Shaq doesn’t necessarily have the acting chops to be an independent character, he plays himself very well. We think he’d be a good fit as Rubeus Hagrid since he and Shaq share a lot of the same disposition. They’re both down-to-earth, kind, and comfortable in their own skin. It’s those good qualities that make for a fun character to watch.
Just picture yourself waiting for Care of Magical Creatures class to start, when suddenly Shaq swoops in on Buckbeak the Hippogriff. Pretty cool image. Shaq would be a good teacher because he can make things look fun and flawless, and he has no problem giggling at himself when the time is right. Earlier this year, he even went undercover as a Lyft driver and proved just how much fun he can be.
Shaq doesn’t have a bad word to say about anyone, and neither does Hagrid. He’s one of the kindest souls at Hogwarts, which is why he commands such a great deal of respect from the student body. And although Hagrid’s got about four feet on Shaq, as you can see it’s not just about the height. Shaq’s got about two feet on me but he can still bring a good time to whatever medium he chooses.

25. Winona Ryder as Professor Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody
image via Warner Bros. Pictures
When I think of Winona Ryder, a lot of her old movies come to mind. She’s a surprisingly diverse actress, even though, I’ll say it, her Stranger Things character is a little over-the-top for me. But that might just be part of the charming 80’s vibe she is well-known for.
Mad-Eye is one of the most respected Aurors in the world. He’s constantly on patrol, remaining ever vigilant for any evil lurking in the wizarding world. But he’s a little on the kooky side. There isn’t anything wrong with that, but we think Winona can really tap into that brand of crazy. She tends to play very intense characters who have a lot of growing and learning to do. It would be nice to see her be an established kook for once. Plus, she’s a lot more pleasing to look at, even with a fake rotating eye stuck in the socket.
Alastor is a little hard to love because of his gruff exterior. Winona could be a welcome softening to a guy who has done a lot for the Order. She could downplay a little bit of the paranoia and bring him back to reality, all the while being outrageous in her own way.

26. Peter Stormare as Peter Pettigrew
Image via Warner Bros. Pictures
Adding Peter Stormare to Voldemort’s repertoire is like if Ser Gregor Clegane walked out of the Game of Thrones universe and into the Harry Potter one. Giving him the role of Peter Pettigrew is a risk we’re willing to take, since as of this writing we don’t exactly know how one defeats Ser Gregor.
Peter Pettigrew is the embodiment of cowardice. He’s nothing more than a doting servant, who is willing to slice off his hand in order to serve his master. Stormare would change up this dynamic entirely. Maybe he still would have to go into hiding as Ron’s rat Scabbers for twelve years, but his betrayal of his friends wouldn’t come out of fear. Stormare is known for playing staunch, quiet, and absolutely ruthless characters, and we think he’d turn on his friends in order to gain new opportunities with more powerful allies.
If there’s one thing that could be Stormare’s downfall as a character, it would be his lack of patience. The men he usually portrays are inherently violent, and known to snap on a whim. Wormtail at least knew how to bide his time in order to find the Dark Lord again and get back into his good graces. Either way, we see this role taking new shape thanks to Stormare’s talent and rugged physical presence.

27. Chace Crawford as Fleur Delacour
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
A little more superficiality coming your way, but let me just gush for a second. Chace Crawford is pretty. He’s just so pretty and well-groomed. The only time he looked haggard was in his mugshot (sorry), but he just has one of those beautiful faces that’s fun to stare at. This is pretty much how Fleur Delacour is described as well, thanks to her Veela heritage.
Let’s work off of Chace’s Gossip Girl character Nate Archibald, which is who he’s most famous for playing. The guy’s a little dim and has a ton of relationships, but overall he’s harmless. Sometimes he acts as “Mr. Fanservice” when he struts around shirtless. Fleur started out similarly; she was only known around the Hogwarts campus as being exceedingly beautiful, which seemed to overshadow just how much she sucked during the Triwizard Tournament. But we learned a lot about her hidden depths, discovering she put no weight into someone’s looks when it came down to love.
Chace would be able to add more intensity to Fleur’s relationship with Bill. We see them kind of just end up together in the film. I wouldn’t mind seeing the scene where they meet for the first time, so we can check out Chace’s magical power of seduction first hand. And he’s just so pretty, have I mentioned that lately?

28 & 29. Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner as Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, a.k.a. the very definition of henchmen. They do whatever is said by Draco, and like any good Slytherin, they’re both totally terrible. So why not take two of the bravest ladies in Westeros and turn them evil?
In Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner are rarely in scenes together. However, it just allows for them to cultivate distinct personalities. Arya is a ruthless warrior, Sansa, a hardened Northern woman. Crabbe and Goyle are constantly pictured together, but they come off as nothing more than carbon copies of a typical Slytherin. Maisie and Sophie can bring out their individual personalities, which still might be jerkish, but at least they’ll be distinguishable.
It’s hard to call Crabbe and Goyle anything but followers. They’re just lackeys who rely on fear, intimidation and bullying to get their way. Plus, they’re not very bright, and never say anything more clever than, “Watch where you’re going!” Maisie and Sophie may be able to help protect Malfoy with a sinister word or two in order to keep away anyone who wants to hurt him. Both Stark sisters may as well be called the Snark sisters at this point, so it would be a sight to behold.

30. Shia LaBeouf as Seamus Finnegan
I once spotted Shia LaBeouf walking up 7th Avenue in Manhattan. I was on the phone. We locked eyes and stared each other down until we were out of each other’s sight. It was awkward. I mention this because it feels right pinning him as a character who is kind of awkward in his own right.
Seamus in general is sweet, kind, and more of a neutral character in the Potterverse. One of his defining characteristics include standing strong after things explode in his face. But he has a tendency to flip flop on certain issues, and can come off as kind of a mama’s boy. It seems like Seamus runs on emotion all the time, which is a trait Shia would be able to pull off well. Outside of acting, my impression of him is that he’s relatively self-absorbed (as any actor is from time to time). But I think that quality can help him add more of a range to what, in my opinion, is a relatively flat character.
Shia does have a wide berth of acting abilities, and like I’ve said before, credit where credit is due. My own personal grudge against him is enough to pin him as a character I think is one of the more lukewarm Gryffindors in the novels.

31. Sean Bean as Cedric Diggory
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
Is Sean Bean in your movie or TV show? Sorry to say, but he’s toast. And anyone who read the Potter novels before watching the films knew as soon as we saw Cedric Diggory on our screens, we knew he was toast, too. But in his brief time with us, there was still a lot of characteristics that we know Sean can pull off perfectly.
Cedric wasn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty. He was very brave and happily stood up in the face of danger. The only reason he was killed so early on in the graveyard was because of Wormtail (and creepy baby Voldy’s) cheap shot. Otherwise, Cedric was one of the more grounded students at Hogwarts. Sean would be able to bring a sense of loyalty and duty his characters seem to have. Sometimes that message can be misguided and he can turn into the bad guy, but it’s not always the case. Cedric wasn’t the bad guy, nor was he poorly skilled in magic. It’s just as Harry said to Cho, “Voldemort was better.”
Hufflepuffs are well-liked within their own circles, and Sean Bean is one of those actors who people have trouble saying a bad word about. He doesn’t always die in his projects, but since it’s something we’ve come to expect, we have to see it play out in the Potterverse, too.

32. Danny McBride as Argus Filch
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Argus Filch kind of became Hogwarts’ comedy relief, which would have been reserved for Peeves the poltergeist had he made it into the final cut. Instead of coming off like the loyal, hardworking caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he’s just the jerk who does his job but annoys everyone along the way. Who else but Danny McBride can bring that level of irritation to the big screen?
Danny is a very funny guy who is another great improv actor. He tends to take roles where the character has an intense disposition and panache with any job he has, whether that be a drug dealer or an explosives technician. And all the while, he leaves audience members rolling on the floor with laughter. He’s got a particularly dry delivery, but you know he’s believing every word he says. That’s what makes him so enjoyable to watch.
Filch is one of the more unlikable characters in the Potterverse, but that’s just because he’s so angry. He’s an unintentionally comedic role because his sadism is rarely backed up by any actual threat of danger. He talks a big game but has a ‘meh’ kind of delivery, as does any character Danny McBride takes on.

33 & 34. Elliot Gould and Christina Pickles (as Jack and Judy Geller) as Vernon and Petunia Dursley
via Warner Bros. Pictures
We’re strapping on our nostalgia helmets and hearkening back to the 90’s for this one. Remember Monica and Ross Geller’s parents from Friends? Jack and Judy were the typical doting parents, who absolutely adored their first born son, but always felt ambivalent towards their only daughter. Elliot Gould and Christina Pickles could pull off a less-mean version of Vernon and Petunia Dursley, but still add that psychological abuse along the way.
Vernon and Petunia acquired a son they never wanted, which is a frightening parallel to how Jack and Judy acted towards Monica. They wanted more kids, but seemed so disappointed with the lot they drew in life. Harry couldn’t help that he was the Chosen One, or that the Dursleys were the only family he had. They treated him poorly for it, and the Gellars can come off in a similar way. Judy is a bit more evil, constantly nagging and prodding at her daughter to be the best person she can be. Jack is less subtle and does come off as a more loving father, something Vernon is not, but nonetheless he says damaging and hurtful things from time to time.
The Geller duo would lighten up the Dursley clan just a tad. They’d at least try to help Harry excel in life instead of turning him into their veritable slave.

35. Aziz Ansari as Dudley Dursley
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
If there’s one thing Aziz Ansari is good at, it’s pulling off a guy who comes off incredibly whiny. He seems to gravitate towards characters who are big idea men, but the chutzpah to entirely follow through on their goals. That’s kind of how the entire Dursley crew acts. They’re only there to make sure Harry has the worst years of his life out of the way so he can live on and do what he needs to do in order to save the world.
Dudley is one of screendom’s most spoiled brats, second only to Veruca Salt, possibly. Aziz would have zero problem portraying this kind of character, because what’s important to distinguish is that Dudley doesn’t think he’s spoiled. Instead, he sees himself as a perfect angel, which is what he’s been told his entire life. An actor like Aziz has that uncanny ability to really be a jack of all trades, but a Master of None (which is the name of his self-insert Netflix show).
Aziz could still command a little gang to bully his cousin, which seems like a local pastime for him. However he wouldn’t be quite as rude about it. We’ll just see a lot of hot air with nothing to back it up, making for a lighter version of Harry’s jerk cousin.

36. Charlie Day as Dobby
via Warner Bros. Pictures
I have to admit something to you all. Dobby isn’t my favorite. I just don’t like him. I think he’s kind of obnoxious. When he got knifed by Bellatrix, I thought it was sad but I wasn’t about to lose any sleep over it. However, If Charlie Day of Always Sunny fame is recast in the role, I will be inconsolable after the seventh movie wraps up.
Charlie Day is the crazy-man. He plays people who can go a little off the walls, but are still relatively functional human beings. His tremendous ability for improvisation is admirable and just downright hilarious. He frequently loses his mind on Always Sunny which results in screaming fits. Dobby is kind of similar, but his anger gets bottled up, and he takes things out on himself. We can see a miniature version of Charlie bonking himself in the head with a lamp, or maybe ironing his hands to help keep his mouth shut.
Dobby is also one of the more loyal characters in the Potterverse, which is something Charlie can easily capture. Despite all the hardships his fellow bar owners put him through, he just wants to help keep everyone afloat, even if that includes a zany scheme here and there. We think that’s something Dobby would jump at the chance to be a part of.

37. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Viktor Krum
via Warner Bros. Pictures
He’s the dark horse of the Potterverse. Krum is a star within his own right. Being on the Bulgarian National Quidditch team while still attending school is no easy task, but Krum makes it look effortless. It’s a similar quality shared by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is a multi-faceted man, but does it all without seemingly breaking a sweat.
Despite his gruff exterior, The Rock always has a genuine smile on his face that seems to resonate with people. He has been described as one of the more humble actors in Hollywood, so much so that people want to see him run for president in 2020. That may be a pipe dream, but for now, he would make a great Viktor Krum while we wait.
Krum doesn’t speak unless he needs to. He’s oddly approachable, even for someone with the level of fame he has. That’s an easily transferable skill for Dwayne. He must live that kind of existence every day. He and Krum both prove that the big muscles and cameras constantly in one’s face can’t capture the inner beauty we get to see when we just listen to them. Even Hermione says Krum speaks “very enthusiastically,” but it’s not always easy to get close to someone like that. They’re selective with who they bring into their lives, which can make for a very fascinating onscreen character.

38. Steve Buscemi as Nearly-Headless Nick
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Steve Buscemi is another Sean Bean-esque actor where he plays characters who frequently die in odd ways. So why not have him start out as a character who’s already passed on to the afterlife? It would save some time, and not clog the woodchipper.
Sir Nicholas was a delightful addition to Gryffindor Tower (and being played by John Cleese in a few of the films doesn’t hurt). But I get the same feeling whenever I see Steve Buscemi in a film. He’s a fun character actor who grabs a lot of attention, even if he doesn’t spend too much time on screen. He can pull off a polite, kind of bourgeoisie ghost who doesn’t mind chatting it up with his Gryffindors. And just for fun, he’d enjoy showing off that deep neck wound to spook all the first-year students.
Steve also tends to play characters that are complicated and sometimes psychotic, but ultimately cowards. Sir Nicholas at one point told Harry Potter about his fear of death, which is why he hangs around Hogwarts instead of passing on. We’d like to learn even more about Sir Nicholas and what drove him in life, especially if someone like Steve is at the helm.

39. Amy Schumer as Lavender Brown
via Warner Bros. Pictures
No, I’m not going to be an anti-feminist or anything like that, but I will give you an honest opinion about Ms. Schumer. Lately, she’s everywhere. Just like Lavender started popping up everywhere for Ron. He couldn’t escape her, and I feel like I can’t escape Amy Schumer.
Amy’s brand of comedy is something that never really appealed to me, much like Lavender’s brand of smothering love starts to grate on Ron after a while. She’s a very one-note character, with very little life outside her beloved Won Won. Lavender needs to be the center of attention, something that I think Amy desires too, though her characters act like they’re above it. Everyone likes attention, but life is about drawing the positives to you, not necessarily the negatives.
Unfortunately for Amy, a lot of her hardworking attitude is overshadowed by public embarrassing stories or quotes that make people question her motives or intelligence. And that’s not cool. She’d take to the Lavender role well, since it’s a high-emotion character. All Lavender needed to do was cool her jets just a tad. Amy has a lot of those kinds feelings in her I think, but on a personal note, I wish they’d come out in a manner that draws positivity to her.

40. Amandla Stenberg as Cho Chang
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Cho Chang was Harry’s first kiss, and it was cute to witness. Even though the two were just in puppy love, it was still a nice moment before all the chaos in Order of the Phoenix broke out. To match her sweet disposition, we’d like to give the part to Amandla Stenberg, most well-known for her role as Rue in 2012’s The Hunger Games.
Amandla gave us a very kind and trustworthy character who was proven to be a survivor. Though she ultimately didn’t make it out of the arena, her sweet spirit brought out the best in a lot of people. We think Amandla could bring out a different side of Cho that may make her a character that’s a bit more in the forefront. Instead of turning on her classmates in Dumbledore’s Army, she’d be able to stand up in the face of the unjust authority, which is what her mission with Katniss became.
Despite being relatively new to the Hollywood scene, Amandla has made a big splash and is only getting bigger. She would fill in the Cho role well. Unfortunately, I think Harry was interested in the Ravenclaw lady specifically on a superficial level. That’s kind of what happens in the teen years, but with Amandla taking on the role, it would have been a little more difficult for him to let her go.

41. Ken Jeong as Professor Sybill Trelawney
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Ken Jeong always seems to wield the crazy stick in all his performances. He rarely plays the straight man, and although he can do it successfully, it’s more fun if he doesn’t. He’s a very funny guy, and could give the students of Hogwarts a bit of the runaround if they’re not careful.
Eccentric doesn’t even begin to describe Sybill Trelawney’s style. She’s a kooky kind of lady in an industry that’s a little difficult to hone any skill in. But even a broken clock is right twice a day, and she’s kept on board the Hogwarts staff for her uncanny ability to accurately predict things about the Dark Lord’s return. Ken would be a perfect addition here because at first glance, he doesn’t look like a crazy guy. It’s only after seeing him interact to we realize how off-the-rails he can really be. And when the laughs are over, you’re sure to see a serious side of things. Despite everyone’s chatter about Sybill, she cares about her students and has made the art of Divination her passion.
But don’t get it twisted about Ken Jeong: he’s no dummy. He’s actually a licensed practicing physician in Los Angeles. Just another bit of hidden depth we were unaware of, which could manifest in fun ways when he’s teaching Divination.

42. Glenn Close as Professor Horace Slughorn
via Warner Bros. Pictures
I’ve always liked Glenn Close as an actor. She’s very honest in her portrayals and looks like she takes to each role fully. After all, she’s known for her immersive style. At this point in her career, she’s had so much success that she may want to take on a role much like Horace Slughorn.
From the beginning of Half-Blood Prince we see him as a retired armchair hiding out from the Death Eaters, but he gets roped right back into the thick of things and helps out tremendously. Glenn is often a serious and intense character with a hint of villainy here and there. Outwardly, she can come off very nice, kind, and jovial, traits she shares with Slughorn. Her roles do tend to be a bit scheming, something we saw Slughorn do when he was snipping tentacula leaves out of the greenhouse. He may be bumbling, but he’s not dumb, and Glenn can give us a professor who’s always on the lookout for his next big score.
Slughorn is the good part of Slytherin House. I think I’d be less inclined to dislike those snakes if Glenn Close was the head of the house. She’d at least brighten up the common room a bit.

43. Samuel L. Jackson as Kingsley Shacklebolt
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Kinglsey Shacklebolt has been described as a very calm and controlled wizard during his time with the Order. So why should Samuel L. Jackson replace him? Sometimes opposites can make for the most fun relationships.
Samuel L. Jackson is no stranger to cinema. He’s done it all, and he’s done it well for years and years, with no signs of stopping. He lights up the screen with his presence, thanks to his loud, commanding voice and stoic nature. Kingsley exemplifies these same characteristics; he’s just a bit more soft-spoken about it. S.L.J. also has no problem playing characters of authority. It’s just a double bonus that Kingsley is sort of a double agent for the Order. He’s a Ministry man, and does his job well, but his real loyalty lies on the side of good. It’s a true inner rebellion, something Samuel is accustomed to playing.
We don’t get to see Kingsley that much on screen, but he remains one of the most respected characters. If a talent like Samuel L. Jackson comes along to play him, maybe we’ll get to see more of him and his awesome outfits. But remember, Samuel, it’s a Potter flick. So no swearing, not even when you’ve had enough of Slytherins on a broom (or snakes on a plane, for Muggles)!
WASHINGTON, DC – DECEMBER 14: Actress Taraji P. Henson arrives at the ‘Hidden Figures’ Washington, DC Screening at National Museum of African American History
44. Taraji P. Henson as Nymphadora Tonks
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Tonks is a woman who is always bubbly and friendly, if not just the slightest bit clumsy. If we wanted someone to sharpen her up, we can think of no one better than Taraji P. Henson to be up to the task. We’re taking heavily from her wonderful performance as Cookie Lyon in Empire, which is her biggest hit right now until Hidden Figures hits theaters early 2017.
Both ladies have their own sweet spirits about them. Taraji plays Cookie a bit more ruthless than Tonks needs to be for Potter, so it will be a nice change of pace to soften her edge. She can also bring a bit more verbal snark to the Tonks role, which in the movie is reserved more for physical comedy instead. When it comes to matters of the heart, if they each control their tempers, they’ll be all set and grounded. Taraji also shows she can be a fierce mama bear when anyone threatens her babies. Sadly, Tonks didn’t get to see her child grow up, but we can tell she would have had that exact same instinct.
There’s one more interesting common thread between the two ladies, making it an even easier transition for them; Don’t call them by their first names. Nymphadora doesn’t like it. Neither does Loretha.

45. Wallace Shawn as Moaning Myrtle
Via Warner Bros. Pictures
There are some actors on the scene who you only recognize by voice. Wallace Shawn may be a guy like that for you, unless you’ve seen The Princess Bride about 40,000 times like I have. Shawn is one of the most distinguished, solid character actors around. He’s got a unique voice that can be applied to so many different personalities across the board. So why not have him be one of the reasons Harry, Ron, and Hermione even discover what a basilisk is?
Wallace Shawn is overall a pretty cool guy with a really great sense of self. Oddly enough, so does Moaning Myrtle. A ghost is most likely going to be self-aware, since they have nothing better to do all day than to sit around and think about death. That sounds morbid, but someone like Wallace will be able to pull it off. He can also add even more pithy dialogue to the character, since he spent many years as a playwright before making the transition into acting.
A good voice can carry an actor far, especially when it’s as unique as Wallace’s. We’ve seen (and heard) from him for so many years, it would be fun to see him as an ethereal being for a change of pace.

46. Eddie Redmayne as Oliver Wood
via Warner Bros. Pictures
We’re swapping out one guy from the UK with another guy from the UK, but it’s not because we think they’re interchangeable. Don’t worry. It’s also a little odd, considering Eddie Redmayne is now technically a Harry Potter character, but let’s suspend our disbelief a little longer.
Eddie has a lot of charm. He’s a fantastic actor who isn’t afraid of delving head-first into any character he plays. We think he can bring even more charisma to a role that’s a nice sort of respite in a series full of action.
Oliver Wood is an extremely confident guy, as it takes a lot to be a Quidditch team captain. Even Harry had a little trouble rounding up his players (until Ginny stepped in of course). Eddie Redmayne showed us that kind of gusto for a beloved interest in his role of Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts. He has a kind of quiet humility about him where he’s got all the knowledge in the world on a certain subject, and isn’t afraid to shout out the correct answers when the time is right. Wood is even described in the books as having a ‘manic glint’ in his eye whenever he talks about Quidditch, a quality that is probably shared by Newt when he talks about his Niffler. Eddie has us covered on that end.

47. Craig Robinson as Professor Pomona Sprout
via Warner Bros. Pictures
Professor Sprout is one of those neutral Potter characters who is still an enjoyable presence throughout the flicks. She’s a big, fun, boisterous barrel of laughs every time she’s on screen, and introduced us to the mystical properties of Mandrake Restorative Draught. It reminds us of a similar kind of character actor who brings that level of enthusiasm to the screen as well: Craig Robinson.
There’s a reason he affectionately goes by Mr. Robinson. Every role he’s cast in, he seems to play the sometimes loud, yet funny straight-shooter, who obviously has a heart of gold. We think having him on board would make for a great addition to the Hogwarts staff. He’d fit in seamlessly to a crew who knows how to bond with the student body. We think it would be fun to have a Professor Robinson because he’ll know when to keep things light in the classroom, and when to straighten up and teach.
Professor Sprout is a teacher who shows a true passion for her subject, something we think Craig Robinson can pull off as well. Plus, he’s a musician. He could sing and play piano for all the plants in the Herbology greenhouses to help them bloom their brightest.

48. Rosario Dawson as Young Tom Riddle
Image via Warner Brothers
Okay, how does this sound? A beautiful, smiley actress playing a younger version of a guy who is on track to be one of the worst wizards the world has ever seen. We think it’ll work, and here’s why.
Like we said, Rosario Dawson is absolutely stunning, and she always looks like she’s having fun with whatever role she takes on. She commands a large presence and definitely knows how to take charge. But she’s not totally evil. Even in some of the darker roles she’s had (think Sin City), there was a sort of good-naturedness that stuck out. We think she could bring that to a younger version of Voldemort, which would attempt to humanize a deeply disturbed character. Rosario Dawson could give us a somewhat likable Tom Riddle before he went full-blown Voldy.
Rosario’s well-known activism doesn’t hurt either. She’s fought for many causes and was one of the more outspoken celebrities who Felt the Bern. Tom Riddle believes in a cause, too, but it’s for evil, and only for himself. Rosario goes for the good, obviously, but knows the kind of spirit it takes to get out into the streets and make a change. Let’s see if that same zest can settle itself into a future Dark Lord.

49 & 50. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris as Lily and James Potter
via Warner Bros. Pictures
I ship these two forever and ever because they are just so adorable, both onscreen and off. And although Harry’s parents Lily and James had bit parts in each of the movies (obviously), you can still tell they had a sweet spirit about them. Not only as individuals, but as a couple too. From their very brief time with their son on earth, they were able to instill values in him that he carried throughout his life, like confidence, honor, and love. He feels their presence even though they’re not physically there. That translates into my celebrity crushes on Chris Pratt and Anna Faris.
They have such a nice aura surrounding them. They’re not constantly in the limelight, and they live a comfortable life doing their own thing. It’s a rarity in Hollywood, and sticks out like a rose bush growing through the asphalt. They enjoy their nice slice of humble pie in life, much like Lily and James do in all those photographs Harry loves view.
When I hear the names Lily and James Potter, the photo of them dancing together always comes to mind. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris are similarly entwined in a permanent embrace, making them perfect for this role. But in my movie, Harry’s parents aren’t dead. They just work all year round in Antarctica.
