Gomez Addams – The Addams Family
How awesome is Gomez Addams? His eccentricity alone makes him a contender for “coolest dad ever.” Aside from all the cooky folks hanging around, the gadgets with mysterious origins, and that badass smoking jacket, Gomez was a real family man. He collected oddballs, giving their haggard Grandmama, their bizarre Uncle Fester, their hairy Cousin It and Lurch a safe place to land.
The Addams Family aired in the late 60’s, but it was far ahead of its time. With themes of nonconformity, individuality, and courage, Gomez and his family gave audiences permission to be weird. This struck a chord with fans, and it’s for this reason alone that The Addams Family has enjoyed such a long stretch of popularity and devoted fandom. (I was Wednesday Addams for Halloween this year!)
He was wildly adoring to his two little weirdo children, supporting whatever quirk or peculiarity they had that week. But my very favorite thing about Gomez was the fact that he was desperately in love with his wife, Morticia. He was consumed by lust for her, and at times, he would be overtaken with his want for her. They had a beautiful relationship that I’m still envious of today.
