6. Veep

Veep has consistently topped “best of” lists since its premiere in 2012. Julia Louis Dreyfus, Tony Hale, and its executive producers and writers have won and been nominated for countless awards. It deserves every single one because it consistently delivers.

If you like your comedy with a lot of acid and barb, Veep is right up your alley. It follows Selina Meyer’s political campaign from Vice President all the way to an accidental Presidency. Although I would like to say it’s the writing that makes this show work so well, that wouldn’t do the actors a service. All the moving parts of this show come together to make television magic – filthy, irreverent, completely inappropriate magic.

There are few shows on television that elicit more than a bemused chuckle out of me. Veep actually makes me laugh out loud in almost every scene. Don’t get me wrong, this show is not for the faint of heart or the pearl-clutchers. The humor is so acerbic and caustic it would burn a hole through your jeans, and Selina is wildly unlikable. She’s so awful that Veep just might be one of the most feminist shows airing. Writers aren’t afraid to make Selina terrible, and they never feel obligated to soften her or pander to gender norms.
