7. Heartbeat

Every time I went to write or research this show, I kept accidentally typing “heartbeast” — guess my subconscious is having it’s way with me. This show wins the prize for most ironically named series on the list because it definitely does not have a heartbeat. Its flaccid attempt to recapture the Grey’s Anatomy magic is just sad. There are a lot of attractive doctors who “care too much” and there’s a lot of shouting complicated medical terms, but when it comes to actual plot and character development, it needs life support.

It’s based on a book about a heart surgeon, but I think I would rather be bludgeoned by the book than sit through the entire season. Alex, the lead trainwreck, is also raising two children and desperately needs an HR course in professional interpersonal skills. I think it’s supposed to read as edgy and compassionate, but it reads as unlikable and aggressive instead.

These aren’t necessarily bad things in a female character, but Melissa George’s Alex isn’t well rounded enough to make me care about her in spite of these things. Meredith Grey isn’t particularly likable either, but we still root for her every week. We can’t do the same for Alex here.
