Jar Jar Binks

The prophecy about the Chosen One was misread. It really said that Jar Jar Binks would lead to the Republic’s downfall and that he should be shot on sight. Dammit, Qui-Gon, why can’t you read?

Now, when I watch this movie with an audience below the age of ten, Jar Jar Binks is a hit. There’s a little of giggling going on and children really seem to think Binks is hilarious. It’s because they don’t know any better.

But if you’re not a child and you can tie your own shoes without a problem, then Jar Jar Binks holds no novelty whatsoever. Especially when you go far enough to dissect Jar Jar Binks’ role in the Star Wars universe. The hatred for this character is so fierce that he turned into a running joke of the franchise.  Many fans convinced themselves that Jar Jar Binks is secretly evil. Further, that he may still appear later in the franchise.

While evil Jar Jar sure sounds juicy, his return would be considered a lose-lose situation because no one wants to see him again. Not unless he received a new face and fixed his speech impediment. Seriously, CGI evolved after 1999, so we can stand to disfigure Jar Jar’s rabbit ears for the good of the colony.

Neither funny nor useful, Jar Jar Binks’ inclusion in the saga films is a decent reminder that George Lucas didn’t know everything.

“I want this to appeal to kids.” But at what cost?
