22. Darth Maul

Like General Grievous, Darth Maul just sort of shows up one day in the Star Wars universe. Specifically, he shows up in The Phantom Menace, only to be defeated after an especially epic battle. At least Star Wars Rebels brought him back once again.

What we’d like to know more about is how on earth he became Darth Sidious’ apprentice in the first place. What possessed him to create a double-bladed lightsaber? What did he do in the years between that near-fatal duel with Obi-Wan and his time in the Shadow Collective?

The miniseries Son of Dathomir actually answered some of these questions, though not all of them. However, what’s the harm in putting Son of Dathomir into a short animated movie? (Are we basically advocating Star Wars to follow the DC Animated model? Yes, we are.)

Additionally, Marvel will publish a five-part comic miniseries starting next year about Maul’s pre-Phantom Menace time as Darth Sidious’ apprentice. Hopefully that miniseries could also be the basis for a story or miniseries at a later date. Also, the cover to the first issue is great.

Any excuse to see Darth Maul in action again is a good one, in our opinion.
