16. Darth Plagueis

Darth Plagueis, the novel of the same name, earned our recommendation as one of 21 Star Wars books that deserve at least one read-through. You see, Plagueis actually was the Sith master to Palpatine / Darth Sidious. That’s right: the story that Palpatine told Anakin in Revenge of the Sith was about his very own master.

Now, theories have emerged that Darth Plagueis might actually also be Supreme Leader Snoke. Our sister site, Dork Side of the Force, has already given its reasons for debunking that theory pretty clearly, but the article also brings up some interesting points.

First, James Luceno’s novel no longer qualifies as complete canon right now. It came out before Disney bought Lucasfilm, so new copies now bear the Legends band across the cover to warn you of its no-longer-actually-part-of-the-universe status.

Second, Plagueis is actually a really interesting character. As Palpatine says, this Sith Lord actually learned to cheat death. However, cheating death doesn’t mean cheating murder. Folding Plagueis back into the world of the novels wouldn’t be a bad idea, nor would he make for a bad entry in this fictitious Tales of the Sith anthology that we keep coming back to.
