9. Pre-Order a New Book for Them

This gift is an exercise in delayed gratification for you and for the recipient of this gift. However, if the person happens to forget abut it, what a nice surprise in a couple of months, right? Effectively, all you do is simply pre-order an upcoming book from a favorite author for them.

For your fantasy fan, take a look at something like Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, coming out next February. A YA enthusiast might appreciate a pre-order of Victoria Aveyard’s King’s Cage, which will conclude her Red Queen series. You could also pick something like Laurie Hernandez’s memoir, I Got This, coming out next January. It all depends on your booklover’s preferred genre or authors.

So, you’ve pre-purchased your gift for someone, but how do you get past the holiday party where gifts will be exchanged?

Simple: print out the confirmation and stick it in a weighted gift box or bag. Alternatively, you could write “Do not open until” the release date of the book you’ve purchased. Otherwise, give the gift to them in private so that they don’t have to be confused in front of everyone else. If you won’t be seeing them, give them a heads-up via email about their gift.

Then, just let the retailer you bought the book from do the rest of the work.
