With the year coming to a close the studios are saving the best for last. Here are eleven movies to see before Christmas.

To say 2016 wasn’t the best year, culturally, would be an understatement. In the world of entertainment 2016 wasn’t great, but going to the movies has been the only source of relief in a confusing world. Hollywood only has four weeks left by which to make their mark on an Oscar race that’s felt a bit muted – again, a lot happened this year to make movies a bit superfluous. But, as they say, the best is (hopefully) saved for last.

Disney is getting one more chance to make some chump change after a fantastic year, amassing several billion dollars, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Prestige pictures that could make a mark on the Academy continue to roll out; Martin Scorsese’s passion project Silence debuts in December (let’s cross our fingers that it’s better than Warren Beatty’s passion project), while Denzel Washington’s adaptation of Fences is getting audience attention. There’s also a healthy dose of genre fare, with the family/horror feature A Monster Calls, director Peter Berg’s Patriot’s Day, and independent films like 20th Century Women. So if you’re sick of your family this holiday season, grab some friends and head out to the movies, odds are you’ll have more fun.
