Buying comics every month is a commitment. And at anywhere from $3.99 to $5.99 an issue, it can also get expensive. That is why the holidays are a perfect time to get the comic geek in your life a comicbook anthology. An anthology is a collection of single issues so you can read more than one at a time. It helps keep the story going too; it’s like binging a TV show on Netflix vs. waiting for an episode to come out every single week.

There are tons of titles to choose from, including the All New, All-Different titles from Marvel like Daredevil by Charles Soule with art by Ron Garney and Thor: Goddess of Thunder by Jason Aaron with art by Russell Dauterman and Jorge Molina. There are also older ones like Runaways, which will be great to read before it becomes a TV show in a few years, and Ms. Marvel.

Ms. Marvel would make for a particularly great gift this year because it is the story of a young Muslim American girl, Kamala Khan, who develops inhuman powers overnight and takes over the mantle of Ms. Marvel. The comic is not only about her struggle to understand her newfound abilities, but also her life as a Muslim teenager and all that entails. The book is also written by a Muslim American woman, G. Willow Wilson, with art by Adrian Alphona.

Ms Marvel would be a great book to inspire the young geeky girl in your life or to get a friend into comics who may not think that is their kind of thing. The story is more than just about superpowers, it is about family and girl power and finding your identity, even when it clashes with the traditions of your culture. It’s important to support geeky stories like this one, especially now when new and different voices are so desperately needed.

They’ll Love It If: they like diverse voices and strong female characters; they are too busy to read comics weekly; they are ready for a new kind of hero
